Gecko's tail snapped in two ! Empty Gecko's tail snapped in two !

Post by jax0n Tue Feb 07, 2012 1:29 pm

Hi,

this morning I saw my gecko being stuck in his cave somehow, when he pulled himself out of the hole of it,
I noticed his tail was snapped in 2. He then went into another hide and ripped his tail of completely.

Half of his tail is still on, it's not how they regularly drop their tail.
It looks like this white meat (like fish fillet), with a little bit of blood, when I look at the end of it.
I am worried if this can get infected or such.

I have him on clean reptile carpet, not any sand or so that could go in it.
Any suggestions guys ?

Ditch the carpet for paper towels. Repticarpet is never clean after first use. Some pictures will help our diagnosis.

There is a caresheet in the caresheet section that addresses how to cope with a dropped tail. You can find it here: http://www.leopardgeckoforum.com/t1129-tail-loss-caresheet

Yes, this looks like a standard caudal autonomy. I know it looks bad but it happens and should make a full recovery with a regen tail.

Yea I feel really bad for him.
a small update: the caresheet did help. When the tail first snapped, the meat inside of it looked really white and fresh with no blood. Now it looks dried up and red.

Does this mean it's infected or is this normal ?

It sounds like a scab is forming. As long as it isn't swollen, hot to the touch, or oozing it isn't infected. An updated picture would help. Remember these things will look worse before they get better.

I'll check for hotness in a bit.
I'll take a pic for you guys as well.

Should I go buy Neosporin ? Can I get it in a regular drug store or a pet store.

Thanks for the support so far guys, appreciate it.

Yes you can get regular neosporin with out the pain relief at any drug store. Personally I wouldn't use it past the first 5 days as it could lead to antibiotic resistance. After the first 5 days you can use something called bag balm, also available at most pharmacies or feed mills to keep the tip moisturised and as a barrer for crud. Keeping it moisturised will help the tail grow back in more normally... or so they say. Be sure to dab the tail with a little diluted peroxide (50/50) before recoating it with either the neosporin or bag balm to make sure you're not trapping any bacteria in there.

Here are some update pictures. One side of it's tail has this transparent red color.
I thought it was an infection at first but it doesn't seem to get worse, looks like it getting better by the day.

Tail doesn't feel warm either.

It is very normal. It looks just like any other autonomized tail. There is no need to do anything to it. They cream IMO will actually get particles of dirt and such to stick to it causing dirt to be there. This is just from my experience and it will be fine. It will eventually close in on itself and start to regrow.
