Tail fattening problems Empty Tail fattening problems

Post by Coisanu Thu Jan 12, 2012 9:20 am

Hello guys !
I think i might overreact but i think that my leopard gecko has a problem with his fat assimilation in its tail. Sad
It is a normal tail not a regenerated one.
He has a nice a healthy diet ( 4-5 mealworms/2 days and once a week dusted with calcium and also crickets)
He is about 5 months old and when will the tail look fully developed (he has only the base of the tail fattened the rest is still thin looks like a wasp stinger)
And also if you can tell me what morph is he ?
Thanks for your attention ! Tail fattening problems 191501

I think that it is fine. He is storing his fat all in one place but I think as he gets older it will fill out much more. When they are that age they are putting most of their food into growth instead of storing.

I agree it looks okay, but just to make sure could you fill this questionnaire so that we can go over his husbandry.

He would have lost his toes from having shed stuck on his toes that he could not get off. The shed dries and constricts which cuts off the blood flow, in turn causing the toes to die.

One of the reasons I asked if you can fill out the questionnaire is because you stated you only use calcium once a week and I was wondering why? Are you using calcium with vitD at least twice a week? Mealworms are not very healthy and very low in calcium which can lead to MBD. You can feed a high calcium diet for crickets but not for mealworms.

I think you are suppose to feed them almost every day until they are a year old, not 100% sure though.

Are they regular mealies or large?

I would imagine that if they are regular 4-5 a day doesn't seem like enough BUT I could be wrong Smile I'm sure they are just like people where some eat a lot and some don't.

My female eats about 10 a day and my male eats about 15-20 every 2-3 days. Weird lol

Hello and welcome to the forum.

As babies you should at least offer food everyday, up until they are a year old. They need their food to help them grow. Smile

Also, it kinda looks like he had some stuck skin on his feet in the picture you posted. As Jolene said, it can cause the toes to fall off. I recommend getting a cotton swab and wetting it, and gently rubbing the leos toes to help get the shed off.

Like Kath, I think 4-5 mealworms every two days is a super low amount of food. For adequate tail fat assimilation like you want, you should be offering as much as s/he is willing to eat each day. Or keeping on your same schedule, 3 or 4 or 5 super worms every two days.

My poss. giant eats about 3-4 and then the next day he skips, and theres a huge turd in the corner. He'll resume usually the day after pooping, and sometimes the same day.

Also, in your picture (however recent) looks like s/he is actually going into shed. So, right now I think if everything is right, then the stuck toes will come off and with time the toes might come back.
