Tail loss help Empty Tail loss help

Post by CharliesReptiles Sat Aug 13, 2011 4:19 am

This is going to sound really bad. But a hide dropped onto the end of Lizzies tail.

I was getting her ready for the vets (general check up - she had black on her teeth which I was a little concerned about. Vets said it was pigment (all 3 living together has it though) and the local shop said its probally bites from the mario worms - Will get some pics of it when possible)

As I was getting them ready, the hide sliped out my hand and landed on tail. Her tail wiggled a lot but never bothered to detach so thought I got lucky. Checked on her just before the vets and it went all stiff. The vet said it was fine (I didnt like the vet she didnt seem to know anything, it wasnt the usual one I see) so went to local rep shop to ask. He said she would of droped it by now. Getting home I made a cup of tea and than checked on her. She has started to already drop it.

She has fully droped her tailand is living in a rub by her self. She is on kitchen towel as a substrate (like normal) and has a normal setup (heat mat, water bowl two hides (one hot end one cool end).

Is there anything else i need to do for her. Obvi I know that she will be needing to be feed a little more as she has lost her fat reserve. But other that than anything else ?

i would make sure her temps run slightly warmer while she heals and make sure she gets lots of calcium to regrow with. I have had the exact same thing happen to me....I dropped a house on her. I was so sad but it grows back and you can't change what happened.

True. Its the boyfriends lizzard not mine, so he isnt too pleased. Thanks for the advice, I did read they need slightly higher temps and she is done. I will give her a calcium bowl and dust her food like normal.

You should also be sure to keep the end treated with a triple antibiotic once a day for the first week to make sure no infection sets in. Also cleaning it off with an antiseptic solution like betadine once a day for the first week to avoid infection. After the first week if you switch to a moisturizer like bag balm it will help the tail to grow back in more normally and less bulbous.

most triple antibiotc ointments are fine like neosproin. As long as they aren't licking it off (which I highly doubt they will) you're good Tail loss help 191501 maybe if sam (or one of our other UK members) pops onto this thread she/they can offer a british solution since Im in the states and unfalilliar with british products of this nature.

Yeah, usually if they don't drop it immediately then it won't, I've accidentally done that before with a hide; thankfully our geckos trust us. Wink

I have had a leo drop a tail 24 hours after the "accident". I know that they usually drop them right away but some times it takes a while. thumbs up
