am i feeding my gecko right?
I got my gecko on saturday and i bought crickets next size up from micro crickets, i was told to feed him 2 crickets every other day and that they dont need gut loading as they are in a container with bug grub and he is ok just to have crickets and nothing else is this right?

How old is your gecko?
most of us on here use mini-mealworms, mealworms or morio worms to feed our geckos as crickets can damage your leo if not eaten straight away and left in the tub/viv and i also use locust and wax worms as a treat when they are older.
you can use pieces of carrot to gutload the crickets on, just place a chunk in 12hours before feeding the crickets to the gecko, depending on your geckos age & size it may eat more than 2crickets a times and if your leo is a boby you would be better off feeding everyday.

It depends on how old he is. Can you post a picture of him so we can gauge his age? It makes a big difference in how you feed them.
Re: am i feeding my gecko right?
I don't know much about feeding crickets.. but I think an adult leopard gecko would eat about 2 or 3 crickets every other day I feed my leo on morioworms/superworms.. she gets 1 or 2 every other day
You can feed him any insects that are no bigger than the space between his eyes Any bigger than that, he might not be able to swallow.
If they are fed on bug grub, they should be gut-loaded well enough.. but personally, I think you should gut-load them yourself.. I think it's better to give them veggies, than bug grub .. I give mine stale bread on somedays.. and carrots, apple and cucumber on the other days
You have to gut-load your feeder insects 24 hours before you give them to your leo. Crickets also require moisture.. you can buy special bug gel water or you can simply spray some paper towel with water and put that in with your crickets.
And yes, he is will be fine if you are feeding just crickets but it's great for you to give him some other insects once in a while once a month maybe.
Many people prefer not to feed crickets as they can sometimes carry parasites.. and injury your leo if you leave them in the tank with him for a while..

Re: am i feeding my gecko right?
at his size you should feed him every day and let him eat as much as he wants as it will all go into his growing at that size but try him on mini-mealworms and hatchling locust aswell as the crickets.
but as i said before any uneaten crickets will need removing if he does'nt eat them

Re: am i feeding my gecko right?
yep it wont do him any harm, alot of leo keepers only every feed mealworms to there geckos, like most of us on here but i do have a few that will eat most livefoods. with mini-mealworms you will need a shallow bowl that they cant get out of or you'll find them everywhere in the tub lol and just a light dusting of calcium powder also once the little guy gets older you'll only need to dust his food twice a week.

Thats ok always happy to help. Plus i take in leo's that haven't been looked after so well and are deformed or have special needs so would rather help someone give proper care to prevent this

Its sad when that happens, we took in a Cali king snake that was being neglected as the woman was scared of him he was her patners and he had left without taking the snake so he wasnt getting the attention he needed.

Re: am i feeding my gecko right?
no problem.. get some veggies in there, too and they'll be nicely filled with nutrients for your leo
Re: am i feeding my gecko right?
Toothless would put away four full grown crickets every other day, when I had them.
Re: am i feeding my gecko right?
That is quite reasonable. I feed crickets every couple weeks as a treat. They love them because of the "stalking and hunting" they get to do with them.
Re: am i feeding my gecko right?
The "experts" if you will, that I buy my bulk crickets from prefer wedges of raw potato's for their crickets-- next to the cricket feed blend they personally sell.
