Nostromo has developed...skin problems?? Empty Nostromo has developed...skin problems??

Post by i<3mrnn Tue Oct 25, 2011 9:46 am

About your leo:
- Sex male
- Age & Weight around 6 months. unknown weight
- Morph (if you know) bright jungle?
- How long have you owned your leo I got him September 24th
- Where was he/she obtained (Pet store, breeder, wild caught, etc.) Myrtle Beach SC Repticon (breeder)
- Is your leo wild caught or captive bred most likely captive bred

A) Health/History
- How often do you handle your leo every few days, especially when I feed him or clean the cage. Hes still jumpy so I don't want to stress him too much
- Is your leo acting any different today? If so how His behavior hasn't really changed at all. Maybe he spends more time in the little cave I have in there
- Has he/she had any problems in the past, if so please describe. He seems perfectly healthy other than the skin problem
B) Fecals
- Describe-Do they look any different than normal not really, occasionally there'll be a long runny looking one or one that dries to look like it was a stain on the paper towel.
- When was the last time he/she went I'm not entirely sure, but there was a fresh poop before I cleaned the tank last night
C) Problem
- Please briefly describe the problem/issue you are experiencing and how long it has been going on Nostromo has developed a strange patchy...lesion-like problem on his side. At first I wasn't sure what it was, but since I've had him its gotten worse.

Heres a few pics to show exactly what it is

Housing:
A) Enclosure
- Size 10 gallon
- Type (ex. glass tank, screen enclosure, tub kept) glass tank
- Type of substrate (sand, vinyl tiles, ceramic/stone tiles, etc.) paper towel
- Hides (how many, location and type (hothide, humid hide, regular hide etc.) I have three hides. one is a open cave, the other has a little hole for them to crawl into that has damp moss, and the other is a cave against the glass with a small hole for them to crawl into, its the one you can find that has part of it on the other side of the glass so you can take it off and see inside
B) Heating
- What is your main heat source (heat bulbs, under tank heat mat etc)
**Please include the brand and size of your UTH if you use one** the main source is a heatbulb that emits red light, I know thats bad but once I get them their own tanks (gonna both be 20 gallon) I'm going back to heat pads
- What are your cage temps (hot side and cool side) the hottest it gets is around 80degrees. The coolest is probably low 70s
- Method of regulating your heat source (thermostat, rheostat, light dimmer etc.) the bulb is low wattage, and I use the overhead fan if it gets too warm or I'll just turn the light off for a while
- What are you using to measure your temps (probe thermometer, infrared lazer tempo gun, stick on temp gauge, etc) there is a roung thermometer in the tank itself that measures temp and humidity
- Do you have any lights (describe type (red, blue, basking etc) and cycle duration) I use to but there was so much information, so I'm only using a red bulb.
C) Cage mates
- How many (males, females) one female, Ripley
- Describe health, or previous problems of cage mates I had her on antibiotics because I was worried she had a respiratory condition since she was making strange noises, but she was fine. (turns out thats just the sound she makes when she gets cross with me) and I had her on sand until she got some in her eye, I promptly put her back on paper towel.

Describe Diet:
A) Typical diet
- What are you feeding I feed him crickets when I can get them, mealworms and the occassional waxworm as a treat
- How often are you feeding your gecko and how much per feeding? As much as he wants to eat.
- How are you feeding (hand fed, tongs/tweezers, left in dish, ect) I usually have to use tongs before he realizes there is food in there with him (i feed them seperately in a different cage). After feeding him one or two things with the tongs he'll usually go after them himself
B) Supplements
- What calcium suppliment are you using (please include brand) I don't quite remember, but I think its reptical
- What multi vitimin are you using (please include brand) I don't remember. but its an orangey liquid with a dropper. its for all sorts of reptiles
-How are you implimenting your suppliment program (how often do you dust with each suppliment, do you leave calcium in the tank 24/7 etc.) I don't leave anything in their tank. I'll dust food items with calcium and feed the vitimins straight to them, they lick it up
- What are you gutloading your feeder insects with
when I have crickets they have the usual F...crap. but the most usual cricket feedin stuffs. I do have the water things with them as well

OK. I'm not sure exactly what the lesion like thing is, but I see several things wrong with your husbandry that is not going to help your leo.

You NEED to switch to heatpad. The red bulb is going to do nothing but bother your leos. Leos need belly heat to digest their food properly, and a bulb isn't going to do that.

Whenever you think a leo that is sharing a tank is sick, you MUST remove it. Its called quarantining. So that if what one leo is contagious, the other leo can't get it. You need to seperate them ASAP.

You need a probe thermometer not a stick on. A probe thermometer measures the ground temp not air temp. Ground temp is what is important for leos, not air temp.

The temp of the hot side actually has to be between 88-95*F. (31-35*C Approx.) not around 80*.

Hopefully can help you with the lesion problem, but you really need to get the general housing/husbandry taken care of. Check this out.

Good points kathryn.. I'd also like to add the lesion could be stuck shed that is causing necrotic skin beneath the stuck shed, also could be a skin infection from an abrasion he may have gotten rubbing to assist a shed. Also just an fyi, if its gettin worse you need to see a vet. Id clean the area with betadine or some other mild astringent wound cleaner, preferably not peroxide. If its bacterial peroxide won't help. Keep it clean in the habitat. Disinfect everything so if it isn't an infection it doesn't turn into an infection because of habitat. Id also so a soak or 2 just to be sure nothings stuck there. Don't leave feeders in your viv, they'll only make it worse, they'll nibble and harass your leo adding stress.

Please keep us updated. Good luck Smile

Ok, update. I've seperated my leos, and while Nostromo's new quarters aren't what I want them to be hes a trooper. I checked him last night and some of it scabbed off. So I'm thinking it might be a stuck shed or something. You suggested a soak?

I always take them out to feed, so there is no chance foodz got into their space. The little cave thing I got as their moist hide was shoddy, it was cracking inside and out, so I'm thinking he might have scratched himself that way. That hide has been trashed.

I'm earning money by helping my aunt, and I'll be getting heatpads, but is there anything I could use for a plastic viv? Its temporary for now until I move Ripley back to the 20gallon and Nostromo will get the 10gallon.

i am really glad he is better! when it comes to plastic i think that a T-rex cobra heat mat would work well because they wouldn't stick to the plastic and it is always at 100 degrees.

thank you I'll keep that in mind. but I finally got Nostromo in his own 10 gallon tank with a heatpad and several hides. It came with tile too, and he seems happy with it so I might try tile in Ripley's tank as well, whom I also got a heatpad for. also, Nostromo is veeeryyy slowwly getting used to being handled, and I have to say he has GORGEOUS eyes!!
