Enigma Sydrome Empty Enigma Sydrome

Post by CharliesReptiles Fri Aug 12, 2011 11:36 pm

I dont know weather people are in the know of this or not on this forum. This is fairley simple question.

Cherry has come down with very slight signs of enigma sydrome. I have read that bright lights could sometimes be a cause in making the signs worst.

So common sense tells me, (As I house all my leos in rubs) to have a tinted blue rub, so block the light out slight, but still allow some light to get to her so she knows a day and night cycle

Am I thinking on the right lines or not ?

Hiya Charlie,

I currently keep 2 with bad enigma sydrome and found that using tinted purple or blue Rubs really help with them being light sensitive and also making sure they dont face a window helps.

Why do y'all call then rubs insted of TUBS???

Also it's the STRESS from the lighting that causes the enigma syndrom to worsen not the brightness of the light itself... stressors increases the incidents of enigma syndrom, whether it's changing the lay out of their viv, feeders, lighting, handling or what have you.

Really Useful Boxes Smile haha its because im different Wink

Her rub is always kept the way it was before to stop confusion is anything was to change. She is always feed a bowl of mealworms (which is low to help her access it) and some locusts every other time (to make it varied) Her lighting isnt currently blacked out, but adding her to a tinted box might change things. She is only handled for short period of times, and only be me so she knows its my smell etc

If your racks are in a room with a window and natural lighting there is no need to add supplimentary lighting. Natural window light is all a leo needs. Additional lighting for ANY leo is a stressor in most situations unless you're using a low wattage (like a 15 watt) incandescent bulb (regular house lamp bulb).

Haha, Around my area thats what they are actually sold as Really Useful Boxes

Ive never bothered to put extra lights in because I knew they didnt need them. And them being noctural they dont benefit from them like a bearded dragon does

Leos are actually crepuscular, meaning most active directly after sunrise and sunset... it's a misnomer calling them noctournal as a truly noctrounal animal doesnt wake for several hours after sunset. And you're right a leo doesn't benifit from a UV bulb the same way a basking herp like a beardie would since they don't bask:)

Oh right you learn something new everyday Smile

Also thats another thing the vet said. She thought they basked and I was like no. She was shocked there was no U.V bulb within their setup. I was like you know nothing :/

Dotty (Really bad engima sydrome) she will circle and go mad as soon as we remove her black clothe.Weather this is daylight or bedroom lamp light.

Cherry, itsnt too bad and she only stars at the roof of her rub for around 5 mins every so often

Just to clear something up here, RUB is not something that is made up, or just an acronym for reptile breeders.

Its actually a brand name. And it does stand Really Useful Boxes. Smile

Thanks. Though I would love to take credit for RUB I didnt make it up unforantly lol...

Yes Dotty like that (She was called Snowy or something from Mishelle) and ever since we got her, she has become worst.None the less we love her to bite. Circles, star gazes and sometimes been known to flip. But she eats and sheds fine, so we believe she has some form of life.

Im lucky with cherry as she only star gazes every now and again and Im hoping she doesnt get any worst. Its kinda up setting to see them like that, but they totally rely on you Smile
