Question about age
Hi everyone!
We just got our first gecko's tonight and they are juvi's but my question was is there any way to tell by weight or size aprox how old they are? Also is there a section on here about sexing? The guy said that one was male and the other female but I never trust people off craigslist when it comes to sexing anything.

Re: Question about age
Hi and welcome, sometimes we can tell whate age there are, guessing, by weight and length. Your two leopard geckos look a little younger than mine but not by much, this is the part in their life where their length outgrows their weight and they look slim because of how long they are getting.
Now being in your care, I'm sure they will gain lots of weight.
Now with sexing if you can get some side shots of their backends or if you can pick them up and get a picture right around the vent area right at the base of the tail. You can post those in general leo discussion.

Re: Question about age
Hi guys! I'm glad I found this post, because I had an age related question as well.
I'm going to assume the man at the pet store was right (I give people the benefit of the doubt) and say that my leo is 6 months old. How old does a leo have to be before you can properly tell what sex it is?

Re: Question about age
at six months you should be able to tell the sex. Some are harder than others to tell on them. Here is a picture to help you with the sexing.
If you are still unable to tell put your leo in a see through bottom bin and take a picture of the under tail area. We should be able to tell by that for you;)

He's still skittish and unsure about me holding him. Even a gentle nudge from my finger scares him. How do I get him comfortable enough with me to handle him and check??

Re: Question about age
It takes time for them to get used to you. When they are skitterish like that i like to just put my hand in their tank and keep it fairly still so that they get used to my smell and presence. As they get more used to me I gently and slowly move my hand closer and closer to them. When I am confident with them I slide my fingers under their belly and gently nudge their "bum" to encourage them to walk up onto my hand.
There are ways to "hold" them against their will but unless you know what you are doing and have a great deal of experience I would not suggest it. I have done it many times for vet visits or giving medicine and I still don't like doing it.
If you can get a clear tupperware container into his tank and kind of nudge him into it of his own free will and then put the lid on it you should have a clear view of his area that you need to see with minimal stress to both him and you;)

Re: Question about age
He tried to bite me. I'm assuming that's normal. He scared me, and I'm sure I scared him cuz I sort of squealed. Good thing leos don't have teeth or super strong jaws.

Re: Question about age
LOL, yes you scared him, that is all. Give him time. Most smaller ones try to act like big tough guys;) I have had a little 2 week old hatchling hang off my finger once trying to take a chunk out of me...lol.
They always scare me too when they scream like that....haha, no worries about it. I have had an hour old hatchling make me jump...lol

You obviously haven't experienced the anger of a fully grown male leo then
Re: Question about age
I didn't want to scare her Jordan....lol..I have a male named Grumpy...there is a reason for it;)
Re: Question about age
Wait, now I have to hear about this! I love learning about these guys!
Pffft, Misfit would try to be a tough guy. But he has nothing to prove to me.

Re: Question about age
HAHAHA, I took in 12 rescues at one time and the one had about 3 layers of shed skin( or so it seemed) stuck on him so I bathed him and was trying to help him shed.....he didn't like it AT ALL so he got a hold of my finger and tried a "death roll". All the while my 6 year old boy was laughing and saying "Wow, is he ever grumpy!"
The name stuck

Re: Question about age
Leopard geckos do death rolls?! I thought that was only alligators and crocodiles! Wow! And poor little baby!

Re: Question about age
Still got a scar on my thumb caused by the beast who goes by the name of Goliath.
Fully grown 95g male, with anger issues. And i gave him the chance to hold on to my thumb.
Naturally he gets held less nowadays.

Re: Question about age
Oh wow. I thought leopard geckos were docile. I gues that goes for most of them. They can actually break skin? I thought they had relatively weak jaws?

Re: Question about age
LOL......we are making them sound like alligators....they are generally very very docile...like any species you can get cranky ones. Yes they can cause superficial wounds and can draw blood....they have little tiny teeth that are hard to see but they are there. It can hurt but it's not the end of the world;D
Re: Question about age
I didn't know they had teeth. Hm. I'll have to see if there any pictures of that.
My little guy seems pretty lax, until I tried to introduce him to my hand this morning, but that was my fault. Live and learn, right?
