DIY bath for large lizard
All right, this is my first attempt at this let's I think as I go along I will keep adding here as I go. I was given an amazing deal on a 175g tank that is even bigger than my couch so I have decided to get myself a skink. I am looking for a couple Pink Tongue skinks but I am not sure I am going to be able to get them in Canada. Either way, I am researching different types of skinks.
Here is a picture of the tank
So, as you can see this thing is massive and definitely large enough to house ALMOST any reptile I wish. So, what would someone do with a tank that they could have the room to do whatever they want? Good question. I have the one project that I am working on for it because my husband BTS is always knocking over his water dish by trying to lay in it. So, here is my first DIY project that I am attempting for it. A bath that is easily accessible to the reptile, but is only an inch or so deep so they cannot drown...but I can easily take it out to clean....
Here it is:
What I have done is taken some styrofoam and cut out a spot for a large but shallow tupperware dish to fit into so that they cannot knock it over and they can easily get in and out of it. I used double sided tape to stick the styrofoam together wherever I needed to and it worked even better than I thought it would. So, cost so far...styrofoam came in a pack big enough to make about 7 of these and cost me 8.00. Double sided tape cost me about 2.00. Tupperware at the dollar store cost me 1.00. I am nw up to a whopping 11.00. Wahoo!!!
This is a picture of the second step:
In this step I have applied the first layer of grout to make it water proof. This will require a few layers and I have been using the stippling affect to give it texture to look like a rock or log. This is as far as I have gotten so far but please feel free to voice any suggestionson ways to make this project better or anything else that you think would be cool in a tank like this!!!

Re: DIY bath for large lizard
That tanks hugh lol, what is it about 5foot-6foot long?
The water bowl project looks really good, you could use the same technique to make a whole back ground for the tank and make cliffs with ledges and different leavels

Re: DIY bath for large lizard
Thanks guys. Sam it is 6 feet long, 2 feet wide and about 3 feet tall. I only paid 65.00 for it, that is the only reason I got it. It was such an amazing deal I couldn't pass it up.

Re: DIY bath for large lizard
not trying to hijack your thread, just giving you a few ideas. the crestie set up was actually pretty simple. the monitor set up had a filtered pond and full plumbing...i built a waterfall into the monitor cage later on and also built a stand and canopy for this one too. was an idiot and sold both of them, regretted that one!

Re: DIY bath for large lizard
....lol. Just joking. I appreciate any ideas. Right now I am actually pet sitting so I have an Argus Monitor in the tank but as soon as he goes home I will be picking up my Pink Tongue Skinks that will be going in there. The Breeder agreed to hold them for me until after Oden went home. With the skinks they will be using Aspen for substrate because they like to burrow in it and I have made the bath as well as a basking ramp for them. It is a work in progress but I am sure it will come together.
Those are some really nice set ups you had. I hope I can make mine look as nice!

Re: DIY bath for large lizard
they worked okay, but i like building them custom better, that way you can design whatever you want into them....as far as structures and caves or whatever...i always felt limited when i used aquariums, but you can make them nice! good luck and if you run into any questions let me know and i will do what i can to help!

Re: DIY bath for large lizard
How did you make the canopy? LOL. I do not have one for it and I am really big into the DIY. I don't see spending 40.00 on a hide that I can make myself with styrofoam and grout and such so I make a lot of things myself.
Re: DIY bath for large lizard
i used oak, and a screen that you could slide out and open the doors on the front. the canopy was 24" and the stand was also oak and was 32". it looked really nice. i am trying to find some pics of both of the 125 stands i built, but no luck so far...?
