Abccess *Graphic Images*

Oh my poor Jewel Lacerta has an abcess. I noticed the poor guy walking funny so I thought maybe his nails were too long. I picked him up and went to flip him, which he will do, to trim his nails and the abcess on the under side of his leg where it couldn't be seen just exploded. What a terrible mess but at least it has drained. It looks terribly painful and it has left a gaping hole in his leg. Poor guy is now in a sterile bin with a sterile house until the vets open in the morning. I guess reptiles don't get emergency appointments. He is not bleeding but his leg is wide open. I can't wait to get him into the vets and get him fixed up. Wish him luck and let's keep our fingers crossed for NO infection.

Thanks Sam, The vets opens in 45 minutes so hopefully they get us in RIGHT away. It's an hour drive to get there so hopefully they will get us in around then.

So we had a really great vet today. Blueberry has taken me six months to get him to trust me and not tail whip and bite when I went to his tank. Today he climbed up the vet and sat on her shoulder like he knew her. She was very knowledgeable and KNEW what she was doing, thank goodness. It is definately an abcess on the back of his leg. His whole leg is swollen and he still has a hole the size of a dime. They are not able to suture it because it is a pocket of infection and it needs to drain. She did find another abcess on the same leg that has not came up yet but it should and drain the same as this one did. He is on injections of antibiotics that I must give him every three days for a month. If after two weeks the swelling has not gone down I will have to take him back in for x-rays. She is concerned that the infection has gotten into his bones in his leg. If this is the case his leg will have to be amputated. It would be the only way to save his life. We are hoping for the best and preparing for the worst. The poor guy has been so patient. It is like he knows we are helping him because this is the guy that at one point I couldn't handle at all because he would bite and tail whip. He now sits on my shoulder and just looks around happy as can be.

I will keep you guys updated on how he is doing.

Blueberry is on the mend. He is now allowed back in his regular tank and the hole has healed over quite nicely. He may have another one coming on the same leg but we are hoping that the antibiotics will help to absorb that infection. He gets an injection of antibiotics for a month, which I have been doing myself and he has another two weeks to go. At the very least it looks like he gets to keep his leg. But, we may have this happen again. I think it is good though. I did not want to have his leg removed of course.

Glad to hear Blueberry is doing well and really do hope he gets to keep his leg at least you dont have to keep running back and forth to the vets for the anti-biotic injections.

Yeah, lol, with my dogs I can pull out staples and stitches (whippets skin tears easily) and I can give lizards injections. Wow, I should be a darn vet....haha

yeah you should, i learnt to inject my horse when i had him then when we had freddie the water dragon (rip) the vet tought me how to inject his anti biotics but bless him he just used to sit there on the table without anyone holding him and let me stick the needle into his leg. funny thing is i hate needles

Yeah Blueberry just sits there. I guess that is what they mean by they don't feel pain the same way we do

So poor Blueberry had to go back to the vets today. The infection has left his leg but it is now in his hemipene, tail and abdomen. This is not good news. It seems it is a very aggressive type of infection and we are not able to control it. We are doing our best with a new antibiotics but it does not look good

Thanks everyone. He took his medicine tonight orally with the new antibiotics and was not happy about it. Honestly the injections were much easier. The best thing I can say, and the vet said, is he doesn't act sick yet. That is our only hope right now. He is strong and a fighter. I will keep you updated and thank you for the good vibes.

So after $400.00 or so Canadian we have found out that Blueberry has three, yes I said three different infections at work here. He should be antibiotics for the next couple months but he has seemed to pick up some and tried to bite me the other night. That would normally be bad but it was a great sign because he had shown no signs of his usual behavior for the last few weeks.

Awww...poor thing. Good for you for making the investment in blueberry, even tho he tried to bite, some attitude is better than mopy and sedate imo. Good luck blueberry, keep up the good fight

Aw, I'm sorry Jolene, three infections is crazy! I'm glad he's acting a bit more like himself though!

I am hoping so all, he has another apt at the vets tomorrow to start yet a new antibiotic that should help fight all three types of infections that he has. The vet did not expect him to survive until the test results came in and he has so this is good news. I always knew he was a fighter and it would break my heart if he passed. I will let you guys know tomorrow what the vet said
