They are insectivores in the wild.. that only eat seeds and plant if they are very hungry.. that's why I give her morioworms and sometimes locust.. or I buy the hamster food that has dried mealworms in it Very Happy hamster will also eat mealworms Very Happy in the wild they eat small insects when they come across them =]

hahah I thought they were weird.. that's why I wanted them Very Happy I love all things weird Very Happy

That is so cool! You learn something new everyday!
I didn't know hamsters would eat mealworms, wish I had known that when I had my hamster (RIP poor guy).

They ARE weird, but I like weird things too. I've never heard of jirds in Canada though.

awww huggs.. i miss my hamsters too Sad

it's not an important thing needed in hamster diets.. it's just for enrichment really and to vary their diet.. have you never seen the hamster food with dried mealworms in?

jirds are like gerbils.. just larger. Popular pet ones are shaws jirds Very Happy

fat-tailed jirds are quite rare everywhere.. some breeders in the USA and in small amounts in England. they are quite popular in European countries, especially in the Netherlands Very Happy

I've had two hamsters in my life and both met unfortunate ends. My last one had some neurological issue or something, and would no joke, pull his fur out. I saw him do it. I felt so bad for him. We had to put him down, he stopped eating, and it just wasn't a good life for him. Sad

I've never seen that hamster food. We had to be careful with what food we bought though, because my sister is deathly allergic to peanuts, and its a common ingredient in hamster food. So we only bought the same kind over and over again. :P

Before I got my hamster I wanted a gerbil, but of course my dad said no. LOL :P Now that I see them, jirds are wayyy cuter!

LOL! I know isn't it?
Miracle started it. My mom didn't like her, but couldn't say no because she was treated so bad. Then my mom actually started to like Miracle, so she let me get more, and then my dad let me get the frog cause he thought I meant a water frog... XD
My dad is just happy "they don't stink" XD

Poor hamsters. And there really aren't any vets you can take them too, so its extremely sad if they get sick. I had another hamster who escaped its tank and fell down the stairs and broke its legs. Sad It was alive after that for a few weeks, but died later on.

Maybe one day I'll get a fuzzy small animal again, like a rabbit (-coughmalakaicoughgonnastealhimcough-) or some gerbils. I'm also liking chinchillas (but I'm terribly allergic to dust and they need dust baths) or a hedgehog. Very Happy

or a hedgehog Very Happy I get to meet Jordan's hedgehog on Thursday Very Happy eeek im quite nervous, im too shy Very Happy

awwww Sad I had a great hamster once, he was amazing! so friendly.. when he was little, he lived in those 2 storey hamster cages and he was on the top storey and decided to jump off the end and must have knocked his eye.. it had popped out of the socket and he had to have an operation to remove it.. he had a black eye and a red eye which is apparently quite rare but had the black one removed.

What secret message? LOL tongue
I want a bunny so bad! Mom says no still, but I will convince her! >Very Happy
Hedgehogs seems so awesome! I want one so bad!
You so lucky! I'm sure you'll be fine! LOL! I'm shy too, but I met Jolene just fine! Stay calm, and just breathe! XD

My hamster had a black eye and a red eye too! I thought he was blind in one eye :/ That is so sad, poor hamster! Sad it sounds kinda gross as well.
My second hamster, Buddy, was really friendly too. He liked to sit in my old toy trucks, and let me push him around in them LOL.
