Shedding? Empty Shedding?

Post by fufucuddlypoops6 Sat Aug 13, 2011 4:26 am

My gecko's skin has turned into an ashy version of his normal skin. This means he's going to shed, right?

Yep thats correct. Sometimes the skin can appear a white to gray colour. Having a moss/damp box within the enclouser can help the gecko shed. Some geckos have more problems than others with shedding. When the gecko is shedding sometimes they go off their food, but soon get their appiete back after they have shed. Make sure there is no stuck skin around the toes, tail or vental area Smile

He's 6 months old, so helping with excess shed will be tricky, but I'll be sure to watch him carefully. Thanks!

Okay lol. If for what ever reason he does have shed skin. Soak him in a a shallow luke warm bath for 5 mins and the skin should become softer to allow you or the gecko himself pull off. If still stuck there, soak him for a little longer Smile

Agreed with above. The more you entre her setup and stroke her, the more the gecko will get use to you. Once the gecko is shed try handling her over her setup (so if the gecko jumps she isnt hurt) and do this short periods are first and build it up. We had a SHTCT female that couldnt be handled at all because the pervious owner didnt bother. But short periods with build up time is how we tame our hatchlings up Smile

Even at 6 mos old it shouldn't be too hard to assist him if he has an issue... I know you're hesitant to handle him much given your past experiences with it so far but you really do need to start hand taming him, but all that should be avoided if you provide the proper temperatures and humidity as well as the mosit hide over a hot spot in your viv to make it like a sauna. I usually lightly spray my tank for a few days before Eros sheds, as soon as I notice him going off color... that way in case he decides to forgoe the humid hide, he is at least still having the added himidity in his viv. By the way I find my boy hates teh hide with the sphagnum moss in it as he was tub raised and never experienced it before coming to me so using a tupperware dish with a layer of moist paper towels may be a better option. Rarely have I seen a leo refuse a moist paper towel hide box. I usually use 3-4 layers of paper towels in a disposeable tupperware dish with a hole cut in the side, not the top... again some leos are averse to climbing on unfamilliar things so they may not find a top hole but will find a side hole Smile At 6 months old Eros was shedding about every 2 weeks...

We have a little plastic container with paper towels for him. As soon as we put it in, he practically ran inside and stayed in there all day. It was adorable. He shed really fast, and got it off all by himself. No missing toes this time!

Yeah, at such a young age they tend to not have problems with shedding; unless their engima syndromed. Thumbs up for a good shed!

Congrats! You may also find your leo will look "dusty" like it has been rolling around in his/her calcium dust which is an indication they are close to shedding Smile
