Random Question
How are Iguana's as pets? I've always wanted one, but everything i read treated them like the plague. Don't have money/space for one now, but I want one someday.

Re: Random Question
they are the plague...lol...jk...Its just that they are everywhere. And that is one of the most common pets that are sold and then when they get to big, the person that bought them doesnt want them anymore. They are good pets, they take alot of work and need alot of care(food, lighting etc). They get pretty big, especially if its a male. So you would eventually need a large cage for them.

Re: Random Question
Well, if you've got your own house and not any dogs or cats you've got an enclosure big enough. Many people enjoy Iguanas in a free range setting, but cages are also good too.
I hear that it's just how their treated, if you get 'em young and raise them right they'll be as mellow as can be.

They are good pets. I've had iguanas before, many..Now I want a red iguana:D Sometimes when the males reach maturity their attitude can get kinda grumpy. But nothing that cant be worked with. But the males are the biggest and prettiest. I had a male iguana that I just lost, he was 10 and would walk around with our boxers, lol

Re: Random Question
Iguanas are a HUGE undertaking in both money and handling commitment or you can see things get way out of control seriously and fast. The temperment is questionable at best unless you handle and interact with it daily. When they get big (upwards of 6 feet) and you can't/don't handle as much they can get mean and need retaiming wich can put you in serious harms way, an experience for the experienced keeper with years of experience. They need a much more rigerous husbandry regimen, leos are a cake walk compared to iggys.
On the flip side tho if you put all the time and effort in, for at least the first 2 years imo, they can be fabulous pets. Affectionate, docile and well balanced. If it were me I would look into uromastix first to gain some experience in keeping those types of herps. Their care is very similar, diet and habitat size (uros are smaller overall bt a fairly large lizard) etc. But you don't get the attitude from a uro if you aren't as dedicated to handling and want a more forgiving herp. There are also some monitors I would consider before an iggy, but id have to look back at my notes to be more specific. Think about full gorwn size and what you're going to need to do to maintain temperament... that's always my biggest concern with large herps and newer keeers.
