Re: My First Mod Job...The Chicken Thread :D
That made egg number 4 so far, and then the brown egg Ella found later takes the total of eggs to 5, from 6 chickens! But we have had them only a couple of weeks so far and several are not yet ready to lay.
My snakes only need mice in the freezer as I no longer have any other species than corns (I do have a lot of them though )

chickens are nice when they are tame, glad to hear your getting eggs already from them.
unfortunately we have all sizes of frozen mice & rats from babies to adults, sometimes we even have cute rabbits & hamsters for the carpet pythons (dont like it when gary gets the rabbits and hamsters in)
i did notice that you had alot of corns jill

we have loads of chickens at my college.. and I hug them becuz they are tame & I love them haha
:/ thats why i couldn't keep a snake.. i have nothing against what they eat and stuff but i couldn't personally feed them the mice and rats.. i could own one if somebody else did it for me one day, i'll get over feeding pinkies and bigger foods.. but atm they just remind me of when my jirds had a litter of little pinkies haha

Re: My First Mod Job...The Chicken Thread :D
The Maran chickens are supposed to lay really dark brown eggs, I think.
I'd love to re-home some ex-battery chickens but I think I have my hands full with 6 chickens .... at the moment
....I've kept mice and rats as pets many times before - that's why I put off getting a snake for sooo long as I wasn't sure how I would cope with using mice as foodstuff. But you have to be practical - after all we buy meat from the supermarket, and that just means that someone else has done the nasty stuff for us. All you have to do with a mouse is defrost it!

Re: My First Mod Job...The Chicken Thread :D
Are they easter bunnies? And are the dark brown eggs made of chocolate?
Re: My First Mod Job...The Chicken Thread :D
haha I will eventually get over feeding pinkies and such to snakes.. I am hopefully going to study a zoo biology degree that specialises in exotics in sept 2012 (couldn't get in this year, they wouldn't accept my current course soo I have to go and do AS levels) and i will have to learn more about snakes and snake management soo I guess I will just have to get over it lol
wooo Marans are the best! I love the softness of their feathers. I also like silky bantums? they loook pretty.
my college rescued some ex-battery chickens and it was amazing to see them in a large grass filled paddock for the first time. Everytime we went in and open their shed, they all came running out, chirping away it was sooo cute ^ ^ and being as over-emotional as I am, it made me cry a little because I was soo happy for them.

Yes, I was very surprised how lovely and soft my 4 hybrids are. I haven't really had chance to handle the cream crested legbars yet as I'm allowing them to settle in first because they only arrived on Thursday... But if the weather is dry then they will be free-ranging along with the other girls this weekend

Here in the US a lot of farmers keep herds of guinea fowl
The eat all the deer ticks (and other lil nasties). I had a friend in Ohio that kept chickens, red ones, Rhode Island Reds?
and some like these
I like..

cool... good to have a name to go with the face
Re: My First Mod Job...The Chicken Thread :D
I don't have a photobucket account or anything like it because I'm used to uploading my pics directly from my pc on the other forum I'm a moderator on. Just found I can attach the files but will need to resize them first - give me a few days
However, the chickens I have are 2x Gingernut Rangers (a hybrid of a Rhode Island Red x Plymouth Rock [I think ...still pretty new to chickens, sorry] and they are a similar colour to the RIRs) , 2x Miss Pepperpots (hybrids of Rhode Island Red x Marans I think, and they are mainly black [with a green/purple sheen on them] with some golden/copper highlights on some neck feathers, and the purebreed 2x Cream Crested Legbars (which look like they have fancy hair-do's because of the crest feathers [they have a background which involves Araucauna for the blue eggs]). Just google them..

Re: My First Mod Job...The Chicken Thread :D
Jill, to post apicture, you must first clickon the icon which is a picture which looks like a floppy disk on it. On the quick reply section it is the 6th allong the top.
Then click ;browse' and choose the picture.
Once youve chosen the picture click submit.
And it will come up with three lines of code.
Copy and paste the second line of code into here where you wantto include the picture, hope this helps.

Re: My First Mod Job...The Chicken Thread :D
awww cool
I'll have a look on google now.
And I'll take a photo of our big rooster at college tomorrow if I get the chance while I'm in my practical lesson. He's a huge, beautiful buff orbinton.. or something like that
Jordan, I think she knows how to upload the photos.. but she needs to resize them before they will upload ??
