So I was talking to someone earlier, and as usual when discussing animals the topic of their poop comes up... I have a minor epiphany and figure since any time someone asks "is my animal sick", our natural response is "what does the poop look like"... well I want to start a thread that will have images OF POOP for people to look thru for clues into their animals health. What's normal... what's abnormal... and what's not even poop (but maybe regurgitation). Often our first signs of illness are in the litterbox... if our membership knows what to look for they can likely avert tragedy in the long run.

SO POST 'EM up people... got a poop shot and a story behind it... post up your poop experiences Nodding

I'll start with one of my own just to get us rolling...

My boy Eros LOVES his litterbox... maybe a little TOO much but at least he is religeous about using it and pottying no where else in his viv.

Eros is a male gonna be 2 in March and has had a healthy existance with me. he hasn't had any irregular poos, but ths is what his normal leavings looks like.

The PooP Thread. Post your PIX! Yes I said Pix :) 2011-06-22032611-2
He has red sand (well like burnt sienna) in his litterbox so it's difficult to see some of the poo as it's lighter brown and along the back wall of the litterbox. The white urates are broken away from them as Eros is a digger and likes to stampeed his litterbox. You know they're "fresh" obviously from Eros' exit, and the lighter color and looking slightly "damp" *ewwww* scratch

Another shot of older ones left, there are several (can you count how many?) and are darker brown, almost black, most of the urates are still intact (this was before Eros got the digging fever Nodding ).

The PooP Thread. Post your PIX! Yes I said Pix :) 361630803461-1

And finally a nice clear shot of what healthy stool should look like.

OKAY then... that was gross laughing but hopefully it gets a lot grosser before we're done... Let's see if we can get a lot of pix up for future members to have yet another awesome resource in caring for their herps thumbs up 2

Ok, since everyone else is nervous to post their poops, I will help out. Here is a normal poop from my 8mth old leo. I feed him a staple diet of 1 superworm a day in the morning and he usually poops around 6pm that evening. He always poops is the same spot.

That does look a little runny but fresh poo can seem a bit overly moist esp of your leo peed on top of it, which may be the case since a large area around out on the paper towels looks really wet. Yes mostly the have dry urates attached to their poo but they can pee, Eros had peed on me once since I've owned him shortly after I got him. Did you remove it from the tank? Sometimes were just accustomed to seeing the poos after they've been on the ground for a bit and dried out some. Were not always lucky enough to catch a really fresh one so when we do they look a bit abnormal compared to what were use to seeing. If the next couple are stool overly most looking and you haven't made any changes in diet you might want to get a fecal check by the very because runny poo can be an indicator of parasite infestation. If you feed crickets, they are known to carry parasites.

No I didn't remove it, and it did look unshaped this morning even after drying out.
Oh you got point about the food. I do feed her crickets. I'll keep track on her poo the next days and hope it gets normal, because a fecal check in Denmark costs around 73 pounds and I get a headache when thinking of paying so much.
I got her new, bigger terrarium on sunday. Maybe that change made the difference in the poo. But if it's that -then I wonder why not her 1st poo after the new terrarium was normal, but that one (the second) is not.

Stress can upset the GI to a degree but like you said it would have likely been there the first day as well. That doesn't mean it isn't stress, it just could have taken a little longer for yours to finally reach a point of stress where out has affected the GI. start saving now for a possible future fecal since you do feed crickets in my opinion cricket feeders sooner or later you're likely going to need one. Sorry it's so much in Denmark to have them done but I guess it's the price we pay for our passion Smile Just curious but do you have access to super worms (morioworms )? It would greatly reduce your exposure to parasite infestation.

Okay so I have not taken a picture but I will. We changed her tank around about 3 days ago and added peel ad stick tile. SHe is not to happy about this. But the day we did this her poop looked like the picture above posted by theodora. She has not pooped today but it has been like that for a few days since we changed her tank around. She eats mealworms no crickets,

I am indeed starting to save.
I hate feeding her crickets, but she won't even look at worms. I've tried feed her meal worms and she looks disgusted even by smelling them. Doesn't wanna try one. I've tried everything I could to teach her eat mealies. I even cut down one in very small pieces, mixed with water and dropped a small drop on her nose. She licked it - and I was hoping that would make her recognize em as food, but no.

Meal worms are a lot less impressive than a big fat active superworm. Your leo is big enough to handle them, see if you can find some and try those. my leo wasn't impressed worth mealies but eats the supers with gusto. Any more poos? Howd it look I'd there were any?

I think poo is getting better - quite liquid around it but a bit more shaped now - so Im relaxed for the moment.
Today actually, I introduced her to super worms - and she doesn't want to even look at em. I usually feed the crickets manually and don't leave any in the cage, so she is not used to a feeding dish. But I'll leave the super worms in a dish for tonight and hope she will get some.
She eats only 2-3 max 4 crickets in morning (each between 1 to 2cm long) so I'm thinking tomorrow morning (Its 21.48 now) to try give a super worm in front of her face again.
If she doesn't eat it again - i think to put her on hungry diet until she eats one! I hate handling crickets all the time.
How long do you think I can leave her foodless and do you think that would help?

That's good the poos looking better. You could always see a bit of liquid discharge. When it poos, it could be random. Even tho it looks abnorma it might be normal for your leo. Are you using a different substrat since bfore you changed up the vivm it may just have been less noticeable then. As far as witholding feeding to motivate them to try something else.... sure you can fast 3-5 days and be fine. What I do to feed is just drop it in front of the leo from over his head ( it'll be like worms from heaven Smile ), it'll flip a bit when it hits and that will attract your leo. Then as the worm runs the leos prey drive should kick in to persue and eat it. Start out with smaller supers, not too intimidating but my boy ate full size at 4 months. Never leave them in your viv free ranging. They can give your leo a nasty pinch (you too) when eros was young I use to pinch the supers heads so they were stunned and didn't fight back. You can use the search function on the forum to see more about transitioning to supers, there's a bunch of threads rolling around about it Wink

Tried everything. She still doesnt wanna look at them.
I read somewhere that some geckos only eat crickets when they are young. She is 3,5 months.
Ooor maybe she doesnt want to eat meal/superworms because of her rough babyhood.

I adopted her from a guy who was breeding geckos to sell the, but couldnt take proper care of her.
She lost her tale when she was 3 weeks old and the baster left her in the terrarium with the big 4 adults with sand substrate (yes with the wound from the dropped tail). In the terrarium there was a dish with mealies and I asked him if he's ever seen her eat - and he said 'few times -yes'. Im not sure if to believe him, because she was soooooo miserable, skinny and shrink-ed when I saw her.

He also showed me her sisters, which hatched at the same time (which were carefully separated from the adults on paper substrate) and they were 3 times her size and already got spots.

When I took her to my place she didn't eat any mealies in 5 days and I tried with crickets and she immediately jumped on em. Starved.

So..all in all. It could really be that?

Her urates are too yellow; they should be white. If they continue to be yellow you should definately get a fecal exam asap.
