Need Help deciding on Females! Empty Need Help deciding on Females!

Post by canadiangirl Tue Jun 14, 2011 7:04 am

So I recently got into geckos. I looked around for a nice mellow reptile and decided on the African Fat tails. They are so easy to care for so I decided to get into Leopard geckos. I am not new to herps, I currently have a 45" 12 month old tegu that i sspoiled rotten!
Anyways, I picked up my first pair about 2 months ago. I got a male bell albino, and a female Phantom. I now want to add a few more females to the mix and am trying to decide what to add that can give me the most variety rather then all Normal Hets...
So here is an ad that I am browsing. I love pic 5 ($80), pic 6 ($60), and pic 1($100). The guys wants $250 for all three but thats more then I wanted to spend right away so I am trying to narrow it down to two of the three girls. He said he can reduce the price some if I take all three.
http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-pets-other-pets-for-sale-leopard-gecko-CLEARANCE-W0QQAdIdZ262002104

Since I am so new to geckos and obviously to breeding them (have bred beardies before but who hasn't!) I tend to get caught up in looks and don't really consider potential when breeding is involved. Because my male already has a recessive gene I am unsure the best morphs to put with him. Obviously a female Bell Albino is my best bet so I do plan to add one down the road when available.

Any help would be MUCH appreciated!! (and thanks in advance for reading my very newby question!! Wink )

Haha no problem. And welcome to the forum Smile I hope you enjoy your time here.

Obviously you know yourself that a bell albino would be best, but the best thing would be to aim a bit higher obviously.
So some good morphs which contain the bell gene would be a RADAR, or a Stealth, or i think there are even Super Stealths nowadays.

So if you check them sort of morphs out you should be able to get some good projects. Smile

Also, if your looking for some excitement in the first gen then there are the co-dominant genes of Mack Snow, Giant and Enigma.

Out of the ad you posted, and the pictures you like, Pic 5 would not be a good match at all for the bell albino, as it is a tremper albino and you can't mix the albino strains.
The first pic 1, the tangerine tornado would obviously end you up with a load of normal hets in the first gen which you said you didnt want. And the other pic you liked is a mack snow, which i've already suggested, so i reckon that would be the best for ya.

Thanks everyone!
I will head over to welcome thread and properly introduce myself. I actually have a small youtube channel of my pets so I"ll post that link there too Smile

Okay so I am considering a Tangerine Tornado but am having trouble trying to figure out how to put that on the gecko calculator. I am also considering a Mack Snow Bell Albino but she won't be ready to breed until next season. According to the calculator that should get me 50% Mack Snow het Bell, and 50% Bell so I am thinking I want her for sure!

Haha introductions are always loved Smile

A Tangerine Tornado is basically just a breeders line of tangerines, (i think it was by HISS originally, cant remember), so in the gecko calc, you can just put it as tangerine.

Those genetics aren't right i don't think.
Bell Albino x Mack Snow Bell Albino will get you; 50% Mack Bells, 50% Bells.

When breeding bell to bell you will get 100% bells, its the mack snow gene which will only show up in half.

my advise, work with what YOU like! and i will tell you why. i started off my reptile career with more passion and excitement than any one i have seen. i started keeping boas and pythons when i was nine years old, started breeding when i was thirteen. i had alot of help from some of the pioneers of this hobby, and i owe all of my success to them. after a while i started to see the money aspect of the hobby. although i have never really been a ball python guy, i started breeding them because they sold really well and alot of people liked them. well, they were a pain in the *ss! they didnt feed well, and were simply boring to me. i ended up with over 150 of them, and was spending more time in my snakeroom than i spent at my regular job. i was no longer having fun, it was like a job...not a hobby that i so dearly loved! it almost ruined it for me! it got so bad that i sold off a hundred thousand dollar collection for way less than half of what it was worth! and i didnt even care that i didnt get anywhere near what they were worth. i kept a few boas, as pets. after a couple more months, i picked up a few dwarf retics and started working with them....i got the passion back!~ i ended up with boas again and bred them again for a while. recently i decided to play around with a few leopard geckos, and let me say...i am soooo glad i did! i love these little lizards more than anything i have kept up to this point! i have the passion back like i have never had before! and i wont look back...i think that i have found what species i was meant to work with! i got a group of ten animals from craig stewart at the urban gecko, and i can tell you now, i would not trade my three thousand dollar group of geckos for every other reptile i have ever had!!! just do what you like, and HAVE FUN!!! trust me, i was almost ruined, but i reverted back to why i really do this, the passion of the animals!!

I have been looking at Urban Gecko, Their operation is only about 45 minutes from where I am. I am leaning towards getting either a tangerine tornado (still can't find it on calculator as there is no tangerine under primary morph) and a SHTCTB. The carrot tail will get me 100% Hypo, het bell....now the question is what is a hypo??lol Slapping head

hypomelanistic or "hypo" is when there is a reduction in the melanins of the skin. melanins are the black pigments in the skin. hypomelanism in most reptiles also usually brightens the reds, oranges, and yellows. so a hypo is just an animal with alot less melanins, or black than a normal type animal. the hypo gene in leopards is also an incomplete dominant trait which means there is a super form..or two "layers" of the hypo gene in the same animal. being incomplete dominant you can breed a hypo to a normal and get about half hypos out of the first generation of babies. iif you breed two hypos togeather, about half of your babies will get a "copy" of the hypo gene from each parent, and be "super hypo's" or the complete dominant form of hypo. if you breed a super hypo to a normal, all of your babies are going to be hypos.

and as far as the urban gecko goes, i would reccomend them to anyone! he has some of the nicest geckos on the planet, and has originated alot of new morphs, including the tangerine tornado. tell him you are on a forum with rick moss and tell him i said hello! craig and paul are both really cool guys and you cant go wrong with any of his animals, i personally looked for months before i picked a breeder, and nobody out there has nicer stuff than craig does! there are some people out there that may have animals AS nice, but nobody has nicer! and if he were that close to me i would be bankrupt! lol
