Fertile question.
Hey all, my gecko that ive knly had for 4 weeks has laid a second bout of eggs. 2-3 weeks ago she laid 2 eggs and after some advice decided it was best I freeze them as I'm nowhere near the level of breeding. As I said, when moistening her hide I found one egg. It's buried in the Coco fibre in the hide. It looks nice and white and nicely shaped. When I got her she was housed with around 10-15 other Gecko's. She is now on her own since I got her 4-5 weeks back. I know they lay clutches, but seeing as she is not in contact with make Gecko's, could the eggs be fertile? If she's been with a male does that mean or the rest of her life the eggs can be fertile?

Re: Fertile question.
If she mated with a male prior to you getting her, she could lay fertile eggs for the rest of the breeding season. Usually first time females will lay some infertile eggs right off, then some fertile eggs, then towards the later clutches more infertile eggs.
But she definitely won't lay fertile eggs next season without mating again.

Ok thanks very much. I don't really want to go down the breeding road yet. How long is a breeding season? And what is the usual amount of clutches?

Re: Fertile question.
Females start ovulating around late December / January, and it usually lasts until mid-summer around July/August. A single female can lay up to 20 eggs, but that's up to, no telling for sure exactly how many your female will lay.
We have a first time breeder here that laid 1 clutch, 2 healthy geckos that we've hatched. But she was done after that clutch.
On the other hand there's another first time female that have laid 4 clutches so far, but at least 3 of those clutches were infertile, with 4th clutch incubating still.
So it's really hard to say how many a female will lay.

Re: Fertile question.
Hey. There are two eggs in her moist hide. I candled them and one seems to have nothing in it but the other one seems to have a mass in the middle with what looks like a vein coming from rising to the top of the egg, or bottom depends how you hold it. Silly question maybe, would that suggest that it's fertile? Seems to me that it is, but I'm far from being a expert in these matters.

Re: Fertile question.
It could be fertile, you want to incubate until there's no debate. Make sure to mark where the top part of the eggs are as you found them. Turning them over could kill the embryos.
Re: Fertile question.
Yeah, they went back as I took them. She always goes in to check I haven't messed with them. They are in here moist hide at the moment. Will give it another week then check again.
