Live Food-Dubia Roaches; Is this a good habitat?
I am going to be starting a Dubia Roach breeding tank soon, maybe two.
I am going to keep a set of 50 in a 10gallon aquarium, and another set of 50 in a 10gallon (maybe slightly larger) tote.
~10GALLON AQUARIUM~
-screen top
-no light
-will receive light from my bedroom's Fluorescent light
-no bedding will be provided
-egg carton tops and bottoms, toilet paper rolls, and paper towel rolls will be provided
-two sets of egg carton tops and bottoms in the aquarium (stacked 3 individual pieces high)
-1 paper towel roll will be set on its side
-2 toilet paper rolls will be on their sides
-providing a different assortment of foods
-carrots, potatoes, apples, bananas, cabbage, and other veggies and fruits will be provided about 3-4times throughout the week and replaced when they dry out
-cat (Purina Cat Chow (Complete Formula : for cats of all ages)), dog (Purina Dog Chow (Complete & Balanced : Healty Life Nutrition)), or fish food (TetraMin Tropical Flakes) will be provided daily and replaced when they get wet
-grain cereals, stale (not moldy) bread will also be provided daily and will be replaced when they get wet
-bread, grain cereals, dog food, cat food, larger pieces of fruits and vegetables will be placed randomly in cages
-smaller pieces of fruits and vegetables, fish food, and other small treats will be kept in a medium-sized plastic lid
-kept somewhere between 70-80degrees Fahrenheit
-free waterer with sponges to keep young from drowning will be replaced every 2days
I am lingering between supplying a heating pad or not-I will be feeding 2Leopard Geckos from 2 separate colonies. I will be getting my Leopard Geckos sometime in March and will be starting my Dubia Roach colonies sometime this month, hopefully.
~10GALLON (OR MORE) TOTE~
-regular lid (holes punched in top for air)
-the basics are the same as for ~10GALLON AQUARIUM~
The cages will both be spot cleaned every day and entirely cleaned out every four months.
Is this an okay habitat and breeding ground for Dubia Roaches? Let me know if there is anything wrong with it or whether it is okay.
Should I supply heating pads for them? I mean, do they need them?
I am also wondering if I shouldn't just buy a big tote and just stick 100 Dubia Roaches in there instead of splitting them up into 2 different habitats?
That and are there any other foods that I should be giving the Dubia Roaches to ensure that they will provide plenty of vitamins and other healthy stuff to my Leos?

Re: Live Food-Dubia Roaches; Is this a good habitat?
If you use enough egg crates, you can keep more roaches in one container than you think. As long as they aren't having to stand on top of each other, then you've got plenty of room. I don't see anything you're doing wrong with what you listed, you seem to be good to go.
Some people like to provide heat so they reproduce faster. If you live somewhere warm, additional heat really isn't needed.
For food we use toasted oats cereal and carrots, with dried cat food once a week. Carrots and water cubes like fluker's calcium cubes are used as source of water for them. We like to keep their bin dry because We've had a mites infestation once, back when we used water and wheat bran & oats. Of course humidity, warmth, and wheat bran/oats usually means mites. So our roach bin had to be redone and we made some changes to ensure that doesn't happen again.
Everything has been working out great, we've had probably a hundred lil nymphs and they seem to be reproducing well and I don't see any unusual deaths or mass deaths. Not using heat pad here either.

@ Mardy
Hmm so if I just stack like 2 piles of egg cartons 5 high apiece could I put 100 in a 10gallon tote?
They will be kept in my room and my room is generally about 70-80degrees Fahrenheit during Winter months and 80-96 degrees Fahrenheit during Summer months.

Re: Live Food-Dubia Roaches; Is this a good habitat?
Stack the egg cartons on their side, that way when they defecate, they fall to the bottom. This will allow you to use the egg cartons longer, and makes for easier cleaning later. Also stacking them on their sides would give you much more space as they live happily in between cartons.
This will allow you to use vertical space, and yes you can easily have 100 dubia roaches in a 10 gallon.

Thanks Mardy
I will try to post a picture of my to-be Dubia Roach "hotel" later in the week
Also, I would like to ask what kind of Gecko that is in your picture... just curious!

Thanks, he's also a very sweet boy, loves to just lay on my hand and don't fuss around.

is he naturally just that calm or how did you socialize him to behave so well?

He was like this naturally, I have some geckos that are naturally calm, some just like to move around a lot.
Some geckos are simply more skittish when they are young, but they grow out of it and get more docile as they get older.
