Re: WORRIED ABOUT HIS EYE
Hello
I'm unable to see the picture, but if you read this sticky: http://www.leopardgeckoforum.com/t338-adding-an-image-to-your-post
it should help you figure out how to get a picture up. Good luck!

Re: WORRIED ABOUT HIS EYE
Looks like some sort of debris or stuck shed. You can use plain saline solution for contacts and flush his eye a few times a day until its gone. If you can't get it off in the next 24 hours youre likely going to need to see a vet. What type of substrait are you using in your viv?
Re: WORRIED ABOUT HIS EYE
i thought it might be something like that
don't shoot me but i've had him 2 days and i used sand but he is now on self adhesive vinyl
i don't have a srynge to drop water onto his eye, what else can i use?

Re: WORRIED ABOUT HIS EYE
If you can manage it, they sell them at your local pharmacy, walmart, CVS, walgreens, etc. Generally, anywhere medicine is over the counter or on the shelf, they'll have a syringe for sale.
Re: WORRIED ABOUT HIS EYE
Like I had mentioned you can use a bottle of saline solution meant for contacts. PLAIN saline will run about $4 for a large bottle and you can squirt it directly in his eye right from the bottle. The stream will be strong enough to get under his upper lid yet weak enough to not do any further damage. It is always a good idea to keep a bottle on hand in your first aide kit as it has MANY great uses for all members of your family. I use it to flush wounds on my dogs and my rabbits, to get stuff outta my kids eyes, and if it was ever called for would use it on my leo as well. Dripping water on his eye really won't do much to release any debris that might be stuck to his eye surface. You really need the force of a stream to help dislodge it. Good for you for getting him off sand. That'll just be one less thig to worry about
Re: WORRIED ABOUT HIS EYE
saline didn't work, squirted it out the bottle onto the spot and hasn't budged it

Re: WORRIED ABOUT HIS EYE
You'll have to do it for at least 10 minutes 3 or 4 times a day hon... make sure to get it good and saturated. If after a day this doesn't dislodge it it could actually turn out to be a corneal ulceration which would require intervention from a vet and topical antibiotcs most likely. Try it again a couple more times today and see how it goes.
Re: WORRIED ABOUT HIS EYE
*** UPDATE***
so, this morning i tried flushing his eye again and nothing happened (like kermit said it wouldn't ) but decided i wasn't happy doing it as i don't really know what i'm doing so i've just got back from the vets.
i'm lucky that i have a VERY good excotics vet 2 minutes away (i take my parrot to her and she is brill with her) and there was also a eye specialist working so they both had a look.
they gave him a bit of anitestic to numb the eye and gave it a good wash with saline and mild iodine to make sure there was nothing in his eye.
i was told that it was a cist on the eyeball, so it is irritated, and it looks like his other eye is getting one and they don't know what caused it, it could have been that some sand got in there and caused it.
so he was given an anti inflamatery, metacam (antibiotics) and ofloxacin (eye drops) and want to see him again in a week.
i also mentioned that he hadn't eaten since i've had him, which could be either/or a mixture of his eye, the tank not being warm enough (it was at 85 now at 90) or just settling in.
so she also gave me reptoboost which is a energy drink and told me both mix it with warm water in a shallow bath so then he would like it up. and make sure i swill him off afterwards.
so, 88 pounds later hopefully we will be on the mend. there was also another young leopard geko brought in with a closed eye at the same time
my vet suggested that i used a basking light as she feels that all reptiles should have one as they sence the light from the top of their head. and england isn't the brightest of places!
so he now has one as no offence to anyone here who disagrees, but what the vet wants, the vet gets

Re: WORRIED ABOUT HIS EYE
Good for you taking him to the vets. There are too many people out there who will not take them to avoid spending the money. Glad you got it sorted out!
Re: WORRIED ABOUT HIS EYE
Glad to hear he's on the mend. As far as the lighting goes if you insist on using one a simple 15-25 watt incandescent bulb would suffice as well as not further irritate his eyes. Also please call your vet about a probiotic for your herp since when you use an antibiotic you kill the good gut flora that is beneficial and needed for proper GI function.
Re: WORRIED ABOUT HIS EYE
***UPDATE***
after a week on eye drops with no improvment, on friday my vet did a operation to see if he could pierce the lump.
whilst he was under the anisthetic the vet called me to say that his eye was actually prolapsed caused by some wound which hadn't healed properly.
the only thing the vet could do was to try taking the eye out.
my geko had hardly ate anything since i had him either and his eye would have been causing a lot of pain.
the vet couldn't gaurantee that removing the eye would work so i decided to say goodbye and the vet put him to sleep whilst he was still under the anisthetic. rather than risk prolonging the pain .
i only had him 3 days before the eye problem started but i was in love with him allready.
in a few days i will be getting a new leo as i think a healthy leo will still make a great pet for me.
will never forget my first leo though
