bearded dragon feeding? Empty bearded dragon feeding?

Post by gothicgurrrl Tue Apr 19, 2011 12:58 am

Hiii everyone Smile
I have a few questions about bearded dragon feeding.. I have to do an assignment on the importance of the diet in maintaining health.

My questions are:

How often do you feed them?
How many insects do you each time?
How many times do you supplement? and is fresh veg classed as a supplement?
which veg or fruit is best to give them?
and.. what time of day is best to feed?

thankyouu Very Happy

- I feed mine everyday or every other day.
- When i give him crickets i normally only give about 5, because he is rubbish at finding them once they hide.
- I supplement with bearded dragon calcium plus every other feeding. And no, it isn't a supplement unless it supplements something lol. But most veg are high in nutritional value.
- Erm, not sure exactly on the best and worst. But anything green they love.
- Afternoon. Not morning. In the wild, bearded dragons need to come out and soak up UV and enough energy to then go hunt and feed. IN the morning before they have basked and soaked up energy and UV, there bodies don't have enough energy to digest properly. They need to bask first.

Smile thankyou.
I'm soo confused. all the websites I have seen online all have different feeding regimes.. and my college are very fussy about stuff because they always think they are right about feeding and stuff.

its annoying i know.. because they lecture me about giving leos UV light and stuff.. but I'm like they DO NOT need it!! lol Very Happy and they keep their leos on sand.. it really makes me angry.. im a student that has only 1 leo.. not very experienced and i'm providing a better environment than my teachers Sad

i know, as a rule they dont need uv but it does help correct/prevent MBD in some leo's and even my vet advises use of it but only for a hour a day. i dont agree with keeping them on sand but unfortunately thats what alot of books suggest so thats what everyone does then they wonder why there leo's can't shed properly or get impactions

Well the UV is for d3 supplementing isn't it, so technically they DO need it, but humans have found other ways to provide the same benefits of the UV.

yeah but in the wild, they wouldnt get hardly any explosure to the UV rays of the sun.. soo they wouldn't naturally absorb vitamin D3 using UV. they probably get it from something in their diet.. or from being active at dawn and dust when there is a little bit of sun. Keeping it on for an hour I can understand because in the wild they would be out in the sun in the early hours of the morning.. but to keep it on all day is just silly.. unless they have MBD problems and stuff.
