Good luck. I do animal behavior work so I'm veryf familliar with weight pull competition. I actually have a video of it on my website (along with canine agility, flyball, and canine freestyle dance, and stunt dogs) you can see them thru the link in my profile Smile.

I know where red lion is Smile I'm about 5 hours from harrisburgh, I'm just outside of erie. Small world. I've lived here for almost 17 years, originally born in montreal tho, raised in south jersey. Maybe you can post some pix or a video of the competition. That would be cool.

Well didnt get that chance to get blitz in the pulls this weekend after all forgot had some other things to do 2day but the next Pull is the weekend after thanksgiving so we are gonna try to get her into that competition. @Kermit i couldnt get any pics or videos of the pulls this weekend as most of the handlers didnt want pics taken or anything like that so i just thought it better to leave my camera in the truck. So if i get out to the next event and get blitz entered ill be sure to get pics and hopefully a video or 2 of her giving it a shot.

you should honestly wait untill your dog is at least two years old before you even fit her for a harness. i have been into the bully scene for a long time, and anyone who knows anything about bully breeds, will tell you the same thing. they are still putting on bone growth untill two years old...so pulling heavy weight and having a dog stress against wieght can damage their joints and bones. just giving you a heads up bro, i would not do it. i have pics of my male in a few posts down, check him out....your girl is beautiful by the way.

You havent practiced with her before you entered her into a competition? You shouldnt do that, thats how you pull muscles and hurt the dog bad.
I am getting my dog his harness this month to start training and get him up in the amount of weight he can pull, AND THEN entering him into a competition. Its like exercising and planning for a race, not just going out and forcing yourself to run without training.

@Rickmoss, thats bull. Sorry but a dog can begin training at a very young age, and be entered into comps at her age. There is nothing wrong with it at all. (as long as you train and ready the dog for a few months BEFORE the comp.)
I know a lot of serious WP people who train pups at 12 weeks, not with weight but pulling harness' and empty cans to get the used to it.
They ALL are entering dogs that are 1+ years old and none of them have these problems you speak of, and they have been doing it for 40+ years.

With proper training your dog will be fine, not like the idiots who go out and hook a dog up to 800+ lbs and expect it to be fine.
That is the perfect age to start working a dog to WP.

Dog Weight Pull's Empty Re: Dog Weight Pull's

Post by asianpersuasion Mon Dec 12, 2011 7:02 pm

I thought my message i sent earlier went through but i guess not. So the short of it is It was is that she was gonna get hooked up in an Amateur pull just to see if she would pull. She wasnt actually gonna be competing. I know 2 of the regional top dogs in my area and we just wanted to see if she would even pull the empty sled. She wasnt entered into the Registered Pulls for points yet. They were just gonna let me hook as a trial before i spent the money getting her harness's made and what not. Im no Dummy when it comes to pitbulls and competition. I Do know what im doing been dealing with pitbulls for about the last 15-16yrs so i wouldnt be so dumb as to hook my baby up to a weighted sled. But thanks to both of you for showing concern i do appreciate it. Its debatable to train dogs at an early age but thats all up to the owner and the handlers. Some say sure its fine others say its a horrible idea. Again its on the owners and handlers. If your careful with them and start small and light and slowly work your way theres nothing wrong with starting a bit earlier in age. And yes you are right Rickmoss about there bone and body growth up until there 2 but when you start earlier if your careful like i said before proper training for sled pulling in fact can help a dog grow stronger and healthier. Its just all on how you start it and how carefully you progress. The #1 and #2 Dogs in sled pulls in my region actually started pulling training when they were 6 months old. And actually the pitbull that one the 35-40lb weight class she was only 1yr old and she pulled something around 900lbs or more i believe. So im not saying your wrong by any means. Very Happy

Oh, well thats fine then! I didnt know the sled was empty. Thats a good way to check and see if she will pull or not.

I agree with pretty much all you said, the people that I know start training at a very young age, 6months or so is normal and they compete all the time and know what they are doing. I dont think they would put their dogs in danger by over exerting them.

I also agree about the pulling to help better bone and muscle growth, if done right its very helpful and not dangerous to them at all.

Thats funny, the male AmBully my friend has is one month older than my dog and he pulled 800lbs his first day.

Dog Weight Pull's Empty Re: Dog Weight Pull's

Post by asianpersuasion Mon Dec 12, 2011 7:20 pm

Nice nice thats a beautiful dog in that picture. And ya thats the only reason i was gonna hook her up to a sled just to see her reaction to it. I wanted to know if she would start pulling if she would sit or lay when she felt the pressure and to get her reactions to all the people around. Also to see if she would wait for me to get to the finish line to start pulling on my commands or if she would start pulling as soon as i let her lead go and started walking to the finish line. Very Happy The 3 guys that i know that have some of the top regional dogs have there own sleds gates and tracks at there place that they said i could take blitz anytime i wanted and they would help me train her up right to start pulling next season if i wanted to but money is tight these days specially with the holidays so i dont know when we will actually start pulling blitz.

Dog Weight Pull's Empty Re: Dog Weight Pull's

Post by pookie! Mon Dec 12, 2011 7:32 pm

Thanks, he is a damn fine dog.

I hooked my dog up to some small wagon typed things and made him pull loud stuff to get him used to the sound, but he has wanted to pull stuff since I started tying him to things lol. I cant leave him tied to anything because he will pull it to get to me, which made me want to start pulling him. He just has that drive to where he wants to get to me, no matter what he is hooked to.

I would love to have a sled track at my place, dont have the yard for it YET! lol but you could always get a paint pan, and a regular typed harness and hook her up for cheap and get a jug of water or something to practice with, if she likes it then invest in a good quality harness. I think I am going to use one of these companies
pulldoggies.com or mightyharness.com
those are the people all my bully breed friends use to get their harness' and the quality is awesome and they arent crazy expensive.

But one of the pulling harness' are cool to have even if you dont competition pull her, just something to do on walks or at home to get her fit and keep her nice and healthy.

Ya i def want to start hooking little things like that to her. Shes the same way if she wants to get to me she will go through hell and high water to get to me LOL. The guys with the track also have a guy here in town that makes custom professional certified pulling harness for fairly cheap and i can take blitz with me to see him and he will fit her right there and it will be 100% custom to her and properly fit which is very nice to say the least. So we will see what happens in the near future.
