Hey... i have finally moved my jird into a new tank and have cleaned up her old tank. i think it's 22 UK gallons Very Happy It's a lovely glass tank.. it was quite expensive because I had to buy the lid seperately for about £24. Tomorrow, I will remove the tiles from banana's viv soo my brother can cut them to the size of the new tank.. and i will keep her on kitchen roll for 2 weeks until I get everything set up Very Happy

this is the tank.. it's huge. should look nice when it's all completed.. when i have more money for new hides and rocks and fake plants.. all the deco stuff Very Happy

Can make a tank like that look lovely with a load of plants and stuff.
I think big vivs look really nice with sand, it's just a shame about the health issues, but sand looks so good and deserty lol.

Good luck setting it up :-)

I was thinking of using tile for 3/4 of the tank.. and putting a little section like a quarter of red desert sand.. Very Happy I dont think they'll be any risk of impaction if it's not full sand because she will be fed on the tile and will have all her supplements.

I also love sand Very Happy One day i'll hopefully own a beardie soo i can set up a lovely full sand enclosure Very Happy

Yeah sand LOOKS really good, impaction is less of an issue with adult gecko's so as long as he doesn't swallow too much sand he should be fine.
I mean, make sure you look out for it in the feces. And if he stops pooing completely then that is worse. But if it is causing problems you'll see signs.

Yeah adult beardies can be on sand, im hoping to move mine onto sand at some point. Smile

A right stout gal for sure (and no I'm not saying she's fat... the tail says otherwise there Smile )

Also to Jordan, you'd be surprised of just how much desert is NOT loose beachy sand like what we try to put in our habitats... most of the places lizards live is actually packed sand/earth deserts, like walking on cement rather than a beach.

Wow she eats a bit much. I feed Eros 1-3 super worms 3x a week (he'll usually eat average of 2-3 per feeding in warm weather and 1 in cold weather). I just think that girls have this natural ability to store fat moreso than males do. It's just in our nature Smile

Just so you know Sarah, your gecko's appetite may decline for a few days. As a change of substrate can make an enclosure look completely new to a gecko, (being at that level and living on it) so it is almost like moving into a new enclosure, and will have to re-settle.

Yeah i know but the stereotypical (and best) view of a desert is lots of sand. I prefer that image lol.

banana is a girl jordan lol Very Happy thought you would have realised that by now.

She is good Very Happy and yes, she's not eating her morioworms (her usual food) but I knew that the change in substrate would confuse her a little.. she's been hiding a bit.. she finally came out today. I give her 1 waxworm last night to make sure she's had enough to eat in case she doesn't eat for a while Very Happy that should give her enough to last for a couple of days without eating.

haha Smile she won't be moved for a week or two yet Very Happy my brother is going to re-cut my tiles to fit the new tank and then i have to set up the new thermostat and new heat mat.. and start it running for a day before i move her into it Very Happy I dont want to move her current ones soo i can have them all there when i get a new gecko from you.

it won't be awesome for a while Very Happy .. it will just have all her current stuff in but 3 quarters of tile and 1 quarter sand Smile .. and i will have to save up money for new stuff for her tank Very Happy it will be all completed by autumn/winter hopefully

Haha i hope i can provide a great gecko for you Smile

I think the 1 quarter sand will be an interesting idea.
How is it going to be done exactly? Sort of like a sandbox that takes up a quarter? or is it just going to be a pile of sand in the corner?

You do realise its going to get kicked everywhere laughing

Smile if its a male ( or female is okay ) and a blizzard or super snow, i'll be sooo happy ^ ^

Very Happy I think 1 quarter will be okay because she won't eat her food there soo she won't get impaction and she will have calcium available in a bottle cap soo she won't eat the sand Very Happy

hahaha Very Happy thats okay! as longs as she's having fun kicking it everywhere im not bothered. It will just be a layer of sand on the ground, and her little tray will be there, too Very Happy

Look forward to seeing some pictures of it Smile

Well i am incubating for males, but you know that gecko's can't be sexed for quite a few months right? So i'm sorry if whatever you buy turns out to be female when its old enough to be sexed.

If you realise its a female and i have the same morph available in male at the time then i will happily do a swap of them.
I'll try my best for male, but remember its never guaranteed.

Just so you know impaction is only ONE of the problems that arise from putting a gecko in a loose earth type desert set up. The constant exposure to sand can dry out their skin affecting sheds, it can also rub on them constantly and develop callouses or other skin lesions. They can eat it for no good reason aside of boredom or some strange attraction to it despite being in a half and half situation (half sand half safe substrait). I would really suggest against it. If anything all I would feel comfortable doing is making maybe 1/4 of the tank sand so that it can beer litterbox area then do the tile on the rest of the tank.

PS I LOVE the new pic in your avatar Sarah Smile I can actually see your eyes now with out all the black eye liner... you kinda look like a young Janice Joplain Smile and of course adorable Earl Smile

I'm thinking that maybe sand is bad idea :/ and i was planning on doing 1/4 of sand. I was sure that I mentioned it before . It will be a little section at the cold end.. half will have the litter tray in it and i thought that the rest she could dig in. :S still I don't know yet.

haha thankyou
