A couple preparation questions! Empty A couple preparation questions!

Hi guys!

So I have a couple questions that I need answered in preparation to buying out first Leo.

1) We live in Northeast Washington, and winters can get pretty cold. I'm
planning to use a tub as housing. I'd like to use flexwatt and keep the
hot end at around 90F. Sometimes it can get down to the low 60's, high
50s in my room. Would that temperature be ok for the cool end of the
enclosure or should I consider running another length of flexwatt on the
cool end to bring it up higher?

2) What is the average cost of feeding two adult female Leos? I'm
planning to feed mostly mealworms, and we'll be starting our colony of
roaches (dubia). So based on two adult females eating mealworms
exclusively to begin with, how many will they eat on average in a month?

3) For supplementation, I think I'm going to go with the Repashy brand,
unless you guys recommend a different one. Is the Calcium Plus a
complete vitamin for Leos? Or would I need a different one in
conjunction with that as well?

I had a couple more questions, but they are totally escaping me for now.

Thank you!

Hi and welcome to the forum... the repashy calcium plus is a AWESOME suppliment. It is an all in 1 suppliment so no additional multi vitimin will be needed. Also I live in north west Pa so our winters also get pretty cold and nasty and I've been just fine using an under tank heat mat for my leo. If you have a tub that you're using for your leo I would only put a single leo in each tub to avoid all the potential issues that come with a small space and multipul leos in teh same enclosure. That sould be left to highly experienced herpers when looking at a set up for multiple leos in the same enclosure.

The average cost for feeding my adult male leo is about $6-$12 a month for superworms and his treat worms. $6 usually gets me about 30 superworms and he eats 2-6 a week. The treat worms I get by the dozen and they usually last me about a month.

For supplemental heating, if you want to spend that kind of money, you can just buy a space heater and warm the room around your leo's. I know a lot of people who spend the money on space heaters and heat their reptiles room and stay cold the entire winter lol.

If the tub is a large 50 qt. and the females had
been housed together and gotten along previously, I was thinking that it
would be unlikely a problem would arise. I would of course would have
an extra enclosure on hand in case any fights started. I'm still on the
fence about whether to keep girls together if they get along, or house
everyone separately. Since every keeper had their own opinion on it, you
kind of have to consider the facts and try it yourself.

So on average, your adult eats 30 super worms a month? I'm trying to get an estimate on how much I'll be spending every month to feed two girls. So far, the cost of having them shipped to me is right around the same that it'll cost me to drive to the nearest pet store to buy them. Also, speaking of super worms, I had read your article about them. They do seem to be a better alternative. Have you ever had, or know anyone who has had their gecko injured by them? Though any feeder is capable of hurting your animal, what is the chance of it actually hurting your animal if you pinch its head before hand?

Thank you for all of the other information!

It would be far less money for me to run another length of Flexwatt than heating my bedroom. French doors, windows and vaulted ceilings are really nice...except when it's in the negatives outside. :P I have entertained the thought of climbing into my boa cage during some of those days LOL
