Question about upside down lol
ok so like i have been watching a lot of youtube videos with leopard geckos and a lot of them have the owner take them and place them on their back in their hand and the leo just lays there, now they say that's just cause they are so tame but then i read the comments and there are so many saying that leo's don't have chest muscle like us and when placed upside down they cant breath. is this true?
Re: Question about upside down lol
my exotic vet told me that the geckos heart is at the base of their neck.. so if you put pressure on that area it hurts them alot. She let me listen to my geckos heartbeat and says it beats a lot faster than human hearts. Many animals dont like being on their back because they are easy prey then.. i dont know about leopard geckos but rabbits go into like a trance when you turn them onto their backs.
Re: Question about upside down lol
That is correct, if you invert a gecko onto his back and hold him around the middle of his chest they can not breathe properly... they will go limp from asphixation and can pass out. Thankfully their respratory rate is quite low so it could take quite a while for them to actually asphixiate but it is a possibility... even holding your leo upright in your hand holding it around the middle makes it difficult for them to breathe.
Re: Question about upside down lol
good to know thanks guys. its kinda sad that i never knew that until i saw comments on a youtube video, and i have been reading every leopard gecko book i can find on the net or in the store.. wish there was more info out on them.
Re: Question about upside down lol
There is a lot of information that IS accurate if you know what to search for... you need to find articles and PDFs that are available from universities or scientific groups that are usually long and a very DRY read but THAT is where you're going to find out THEE most useful information about the finer tuned thigs such as respratory stress etc. I would search leopard gecko anatomy then the specific area from there. The problem is that there is so much user donated information out on the web and a lot of it IS misinformation, and comes up often in the searches high on the list so those are the most frequently clicked ones which keeps them high on the lists despite being usually useless. Most somewhat dependable info can come from sites like .edu or they'll have the university name as well purdue.edu.com those are the ones I look for when researching something
