Crested Gecko Help
Im looking to breed crested geckos within the next couple of years. But I wish everything to be completely and 100% correct before I go into breeding.
This is currently what their setups are :
45 by 45 by 45 exo terra (they live in one each)
Eco earth soil (around 2-4 inches deep)
Loads of plants and hiding places corn barks etc etc
They have Repashy every other day.
No additonal lighting (but they know a day and night cycle)
No additonal heating (but my room is slightly above average room temp)
they are both fully healthy, and the correct breeding age and weights. They cali sacks (as back of mouth) look really full.
My questions are :
1. Am I missing anything?
2. Should they be eating live food along with the Repashy?
3. Should they have addiontal heating & lighting to breed successful...

Re: Crested Gecko Help
Generally, with Cresties it is all about their weight rather than their size. I would not recommend breeding any crestie under 18months as they are still growing!!! The recommended breeding weight is 40gs, but 30-35g is acceptable!
In order to induce breeding, temperatures should be kept between 75F and 80F during the day and can drop up to 5 degrees at night but other than that you are set to go
Cresties can be kept on CGD and breed with no troubles but I always give my cresties a mixture and I make sure I dust the crickets! Your female will need as much calcium as she can gets during this time.

Re: Crested Gecko Help
Thanks.
Both male and female are over a year of age. They are around 1.5 to 2 years of age now and the female is around 45g the male is slightly less at around 30g
I gotta get a digi temp reader to know what their setup is reading. If its between 75-80 should i leave it without any additonal heat ? if its below that should i add some addiontal heating to make them "in the mood" ? If so whats best basking lamp/cermic lamp or a heatmat ?
Well I know the leos do better on various different live food so the cresties surely will be te same. Is locusts okay for them to eat ? The leos always have their food dusted (once a week) so the cresties would have the same treatment - wouldnt want her getting mbd

Re: Crested Gecko Help
Sounds like they are in perfect shape for breeding with heating a simple heat mat can help... you can mount it on the floor or on the sides.. either works as long as it is on a thermostat
My Cresties love locusts so I'm sure yours will too

Re: Crested Gecko Help
This is gunna sound really really stupid lol. But best to put it on the outside of the exo so the water doesnt effect it ? and all my heatmats are put on stats (same with cermics)
If the temps are not the correct (too low) will that cause them not to be bothered in breeding ?
Thanks you been great help

Re: Crested Gecko Help
Heatmats work best on the outsides of glass vivs and but water shouldnt affect it but better safe than sorry
Generally rooms tend to be around 75F anyways (mine include), and they cannot tolerate high temps so you shouldn't need a heat mat unless it is really cold in your room and too low is not usually a problem as they can tolerate cooler temps better than hotter. But if you want the best breeding sucess, the correct temps are desirable
