Hello fellow gecko lovers, I recently
bought two leopard geckos(male/female pr) to add to my 40 breeder which
I've already had a female leopard gecko in. I am a little confused on
there genes/morph or what type of geckos they are? Sorry about the lack
of knowledge on my part, I am still learning the lingo associated with
these fascinating critters. So, I have three leopard geckos in a 40
breeder with carpet for substrate, a half log, a small cave, a small
ceramic tower, a med. water dish, a plastic soup dish with a hole for an
entrance with moistened moss for humidity chamber/egg laying. I have
one 60watt daybulb and one 40 wat night bulb. I feed crickets every
other day and dust calc. every other feeding. Am I doing anything wrong?
Or anything to do better? need more info? ask please. Is my heat setup
ok? Kinda of new to the hobby and could use some guidance Please!![You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Hello there are welcome to the forum. If you would like us to identify the Morph for you we can do that if you would post their pictures in the Morph ID section of the pictures that would be great:)

Carpet is better than sand but even better would be slate tiles, peel and stick tiles of something like that that is easy to clean. Over time the carpet gets bacteria in it and I also find that their little teeth get stuck in it when they dive on their crickets. This was just my experience with it.

The one thing that I would change immediately would be your heat. For a leopard gecko to digest food they need heat UNDER their bellies. Your local pet shop should have what is called heat mats that stick underneath your tank and usually you put a hide over top of it so that your leo can eat and then go lay on the warm spot to digest. As leopard geckos are crepsecular(meaning they are most active during the evening and early morning) they actually do not require ANY lights and it stresses them out some.

Sounds to me like you are doing good on your feedings and dusting. Many here perfer not to use crickets because they can carry parasites and such but I have to admit that I do use them for some entertainment for them once in a while. I have many other reptiles that have to have crickets so I have them here anyways. Your leopard gecko would also be quite happy with meal worms, or super worms depending on how old they are.

Phew, there is the start of it. Please ask ANY and ALL questions that you have. This is what we are here for and what we love to do. There are many friendly people here and many great teachers and people with opinions.

Hope to chat some more

Welcome to the forum Fred Smile sounds like you're well on your way to quie an exciting adventure... owning 1 leopard gecko can be quite intimidating for new owners and you have a whole group! There are quite a few things you might want to read up on.

First in the housing section there is a great sticky on properly housing a leo. Covers everything you would ever hope to know about proper housing.... has some pretty groovy pictures to if I do say so Cool aside of that jolene pretty much gave you the abridged version Wink

Next... group housing. Can be very tricky esp. If your leos aren't all comparable in size. There could be bullying, fighting and stress from competing for the best hides, best feeding opportunity, best anything, or from the male constantly pestering an unwilling female to breed. The best way to manage this, AFTER YOU QUARANTINE the new additions for at least 30-60 days, is to offer many hides on the warm side. Ideally 1 for each leo. Also offer at least 2 on the cool side then a couple moist hides as well. I use 2 food dishes if you're placing feeders in a dish for your herps. This way you can eliminate 2 of the major points of contention, shelter and food. You'll have to watch your group to make sure no one is being a pest after you get them all together.

Good luck with everything. Can't wait for your pictures Smile

Welcome to the forum! Sure that you will have a great time looking through the site and chatting to other members. Everyone is friendly and helpful here. No judgements and personal attacks, ever.

Why don't you post some pics of your leo's in the Morph ID section then we can all have a go at identifying the morphs for you? I know Sarah really enjoys doing this. Very Happy

First of all welcome to the site. I'm new to and all ready love it here. Everyone is so active and frienly. So Im sure you will love it just as much Smile

Your setup sounds perfect to me. I wouldnt bother breeding them this yearly because, the season is almost over. I would house the male and female seprate where possible. This is so the male doesnt try to breed with her outside of the season and stress her out. Possibly causing eating problems and health issues. I house all my seprate and only add the male when needed.

As for morphs. Post some photos of the leopard geckos up in the picture - Morph ID section and someone/some people will be able to tell you what they are Smile

Charlie... I thought you had mentioned that you are currently housing 3 leos together in your mouth issue thread?

i dont know how to Quote so will reply like this.

The ones with the mouth issues arent actually mine they are the other halfs. Custard is my male but Ally, Cookie, Snowball, Lizzie and Dotty are all his (ovbi not all housed together)

Mines are Gizzy, Cherry, MBD, Marmite, Echo, Macaroni are housed in their own rubs by their self. So it the crested geckos within 45 cubed exo.s

Yea I took the advice on the heat pad and bought one friday and put it opposite my water and food dishes and also put in some more hides on both sides of the vivarium as well as another humidity/egg laying chamber.
