Finally eating - advice needed
Hi. After the egg laying business I finally have my female leopard gecko eating. She still won't touch the meal worm, but I bought some silk worms today. She snapped them up. So happy to see her eat for the first time since I got her a week ago. She has eaten 3 silk worms so far in about 3 minutes. How many should I feed her of them a day? Only thing she will eat at the moment so this will be her only food until I get her on something else.

Hm, that's not good. Waxies are addictive and she could refuse other feeders. Id try superworms because they move more and can be more appealing. If shes big enough to lay eggs she can handle supers. You could also try crickets, not my favorite because they could carry parasites or you could end up accidentally getting the more aggressive jamaician field cricket (read the sticky in the feeding section, why to never feed crickets, there's a picture of what they look like). Movement triggers prey drive and honestly mealies are kinda boring esp. If you're putting them in a dish.

Yeah, she's not interested in them at all. Not even when I put some on the floor in front of him. I'll try and get some super worms on Saturday. Try don't sell them in my 2 local(15miles away) stores. I did get some crickets today also. Thinking now though they maybe to small. I got the 4th stage ones. I normally get standard or large for my scorpion. But I thought she may need smaller than that? If they are to small being 4th stage I can go back and get bigger ones tomorrow.

Id try them anyway. See if it trips her trigger, just remove the jumper legs if they're too fast for her. Remember she can eat anything as long as it is no bigger around than the space between her eyes. Also you can check bait shops, for fishermen... they usually carry a good selection of feeder bugs.

Re: Finally eating - advice needed
That all depends on her really. For now a reasonable amount like 6-8 to be sure she doesn't regurge, then if you get bigger ones just be sensible. Don't let her eat like 15. I always err on the side of caution. Id rather underfeed and keep 'em a lil hungry rather than let them gorge then risk regurge. As long as she's not underweight she'll be fine. Feed the same amount every time so its a steady consistant diet. For example, eros usually eats 2-3 supers every other day. He shed wednesdy last week so I didn't even try feeding him till Sunday, he ate 4, likely would have taken 5 if I offered it but wasn't gonna risk it, now when I feed him tonight he will likely only eat 2. See where I'm goin with this?

Yeah. I'd rather not over feed. So 6-8 4th stages every other day? To finish the wax worms would 1-2 a week be ok? I'm goons get the super worms too.

Re: Finally eating - advice needed
You can feed a waxie every other feeding to get rid of them no problem. Key is to get the gecko to eat proper food. If your gecko will take on crickets, great. If she'll eat superworms, great.
I find that crickets are great for jump starting a gecko to eat properly, something about them that just excites the gecko's hunting instinct. Waxworms on the other hand, tend to get the geckos to eat nothing but waxworms, and that's a bad idea.

In some pet store, they call superworms either Morioworms or giant mealworms x

Re: Finally eating - advice needed
I asked at a shop today for super worms and he said you mean Morioworms. Didn't get them as most were dead in there. One thing I'm not sure of. Many people say to feed geckos everyday, others say every other day. Which is best? I was advised to feed 8 or so crickets one day, then 3-4 wax worms or super worms the next. Is that to much? I'm more used to the feeding of a scorpion my last pet. That fed twice a week so every day sounds alot to me. What's the best way for the gecko?

Juvies should be feed once a day but adults I usually feed them every 2-3 days with 3-4 morioworms per gecko My store stocks Morioworms and we feed ours ever 5 days and clean them out too ^^

Re: Finally eating - advice needed
I feed eros usually every other day or every 2 days, so mon. Wed. Fri. Or tues. Fri. Mon. Then start back on the mon. Wed. Fri schedule. This all is depending on whe he last shed. Eros is an adult male over 1 yr old. A lot of it is just knowing your leo. I believe in always leaving them a little hungry. It makes them a more enthusiastic eater imo. He usually eats 2-3 morio/superworms per feeding, rarely he eats 4. Just an fyi, giant mealworms are different from superworms/morioworms. Giant meal worms are just that, there are physical and nutritional differences between them. Check out the feeding section sticky superworms versus mealworms for the differences and pictures on how to distinguish the 2.
