My babies
These are my reptile-babies...the one swimming is our male "little g" and behind the rock peaking out on the right is our new female "Bella" This was their first night together...she was drinking from the dish and little g wanted to swim..she was kind of snobby, stuck her nose in the air and turned and walked away from him....they seem to be getting along great. we have 2 hides 1 small and one XL...usually they share the XL hide...one to each side. They are quite happy this way....still learning more about them everyday. I had provided a laybox...haven't noticed any signs of any eggs at all...is it possible where she is new to the environment that she may produce eggs later in the season or not at all?

Re: My babies
She's going to need to settle in and feel comfortable in her new environment before she's likely to breed. She'll only lay eggs if she came to you already bred or if she's ovulated and has infertile eggs in her which culd go either way, she could lay, or she could reabsorb them and lay nothing. Any idea of he age/weight of your leos? Maybe its just me but I'm not seeing any pictures...

Re: My babies
My male is what I thought to be about 7-8 months...but he is like 7.5 inches long...I was told he must be the wrong age....she is suposed to be 2 years old and has laid eggs before. He is just a bit larger than her I would say...they are both very strong and seem very healthy....she has started to eat A LOT!!! Every second night she is consuming a large amount of meal worms

This information is incorrect, I'm afraid. A leo, or any reptile for that matter, can take up to a week to settle in. It depends on the animal, and there honestly is not an average but generally a week is the rule of thumb.

Re: My babies
Your picture still isnt showing up. The size is good for a breeding pair, and if the female is eating a ton of mealies you may want to consider switching to superworms. Less shell will make them easier to digest and reduce risk of constipation from all the chitin she's eating in mealies. Feed an appropriate sized feeders for optimum health. You might want to check out the sticky in the feeder section supers versus mealies. My boy Eros was about 7 inches long at 8 mos old so it is likely an appropriate age guesstimate.
Re: My babies
Superworms seem like they are SO BIG...how can I be sure they will be ok for her to consume? How many I wonder would she consume? I live about an hour and a half away from a pet store so I just have to have a plan in mind before I go....What if my boy wantes to try them? Should I let him...would he be ok? Do superworms stay in the fridge as well?

Re: My babies
Again please check the Supers versus mealies thread, http://www.leopardgeckoforum.com/t290-the-difference-between-superworms-and-mealworms
you don't have to refrigerate supers and I get them 36 at a tme and keep them in a cricket keeper at room temperature in rolled oats. Just provide food and they will not morph into nymphs until they're seperated into individual cells and stop feeding. Do not regrigerate supers anything under like 50-60*F will kill them. A 2 year old leo can absolutely handle superworms, my boy had been on the since he was 6 months old. Your leo can eat anything that is smaller around than the space between his eyes so likely both can handle them. My boy eats 2-4 supers every other day. Def. Helps with the food bill versus mealies.

Re: My babies
That scares me a little because we had a problem with what are they called...flour mites from keeping our mealworms out of the fridge and trying to let them breed and whatnot....HUGE disaster!!!

Re: My babies
What type of bedding were you using? I've never had a problem with getting mites with the supers, just change the oats out every few weeks so they're not living in their own frass. The mites had to come from somewhere, most likely the supplier where you got the mealies.
Re: My babies
Humidity and warmth will breed mites like no tomorrow. Mites can come from bedding that you normally use like oats & wheat bran. To avoid getting an infestation keep humidity low. If you have to keep the top off the containers when you have them out so it doesn't build up humidity and get warm inside.
Re: My babies
Well I guess that explains why I never got mites, the cricket keeper has a highly ventilated lid.
Re: My babies
I went to some petstore near me for the first time to check it out and ALL of their feeder tanks were infested with those little red beetle things.. Im guessing those are the mites u guys are talking about. Disgusting.

Re: My babies
nope..these mites just look like dust...until you look really close and see that they are moving....if you ever do get them...there is a consentration of rubbing alchol and water you can make up...kills them off pretty good

Re: My babies
They're pretty but your substrait is all wrong. They don't need wood chips, they're dangerous and hazardous. Id switch to tile or papertowels. Check out the housing forum, there's a sticky about making the perfect leo set up, also in the photo section there's. Sticky show off your set ups, could give you some good ideas for a safe proper set up.

Re: My babies
Loose substrate in general is a bad thing, is what Kermit is trying to say. Paper towels and tile is your best bet.
