Feeding success Empty Feeding success

Post by ozziesmum Sat Jan 28, 2012 6:55 am

I am so happy tonight Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Tripod has eaten 3 crickets, I chilled them first to slow them down and put 1 in at a time, s/he picked the first one up and just stood with it in her mouth until s/he decided to eat it then the second and third went straight down. I so hope this is the turning point and I can now give her a varied diet as s/he hasn't enjoyed being on a diet.

It's not silly at all, I got my fat tail to eat (a picky cricket only eater) and it made the rest of the night better. Smile

thumbs up 2 but just so you know, all reps need to eat warm food. Cold food can make them throw up. Leo's are good hunter's, they will catch them sooner or later.

That's something new. I haven't heard that one before. Putting crix in a fridge for a hall hour, not the freezer, will not drastically reduce their core temperate. They will still be warm on the inside but it will slow them down. The "they'll catch them eventually" thought is great but if the crix harass the leo in the meantime, it could put the leo off food altogether. Chilled crix seem the lesser of 2 evils imo. thanks for the info tho.

np. once I fed some mealworms and I only waited 30 minutes when I tool them out the fridge and my gecko throw them back up. I was worried and called the vet and she asked me if I left the mealworms warm up for a few hours and I said oops, no. Never happened again after i let them sit out for a few hours. About the crickets my leo's tear them up like pacman, lol only put in 2to 3 at a time. I watch them. What they if they have trouble catching tne, is they stay in there hides and wait till the crickets go in and chomp! In the wild they don't have people pulling of legs and chilling crickts for them. Just don't leave the crickets in for more than 2 hours.

I feed meal worms and wax worms right out the fridge, I've never had a problem with it. Granted, Abominable usually waits to eat out of her dish after I've left but her and Snowy both eat super cold waxies without incident.

Hi all

thanks for the replies, Tripod has now eaten chilled crickets for the last 3 days and s/he's just fine but thanks for the concern peach75, s/he's poo'ed and it looks normal I'm hoping to reach the stage where I can give her as varied a diet as is possible but here in the uk we don't seem to have the variety of feeders available to us, hopefully I might have a bit more success with the silkworm eggs hatching this time, I've just got to get the setup right then fingers crossed we shall have some babies.

The vet never told me why or maybe I forgot. i googled it and it says never to feed a reptile cold food, but doesn' say why. I guess since they are"cold blooded" i's like us swallowing an ice cube.

How do you gut load kodie if ur feeding mealies straight out of the fridge? Its recommended you take feeder out 24 hours prior to feeding for then to de-hibernate and properly gut load them.

Peach, feeding directly from the fridge that animal is cold all the way thru so yeah I could see how that might be problematic for some leos, kinda like a leo brain freeze Smile
