Quarantine and new geckos. Empty Quarantine and new geckos.

Post by dhinkle Mon Jan 09, 2012 2:20 pm

So i got my first gecko in the beginning of November 2011 have had it for a couple months im guessing the age is about 4 months since it was bigger then the other geckos at the store and i wanted to pick a nice healthy looking one. Anyways i decided i wanted a second one and picked one out a few days ago. This one is quite small guessing age 3-4 weeks old. My question is how long should i keep the gecko quarantined in a second tank from the other one. I want to wait until it gets bigger so its closer to the other one in size and the one i have now is a female so I am hoping that they will get along when i introduce them. Also i plan on getting a 20 gallon long tank since my current one is only a 10 gallon normal is the 20 long sufficient for two geckos? Also this new one seems pretty healthy ate on the first day and seems comfortable in the spare tank i borrowed from a friend. Also using paper towel substrate and a few hides and a water dish.

You want to quarantine for at least 60 days. Also I wouldn't recommend putting the gecko in with another if you aren't sure of the sex.

20 gallon long is indeed big enough for 2, but you need to make sure they are very similar in size and weight to avoid bullying. Also some females are just feisty females, they won't play well with others. So while you hope they'll get along, plan a backup plan for when they don't get along.

Thanks for the info will definitely make sure they are apart for at least that long. I have a home for the new gecko if things don't work out between them. I also don't plan on putting them together until i know the sex of the new gecko. Smile Thank you again!

Just a note, if they are under 6 months you won't be able to accurately sex them. You usually can't sex a leopard gecko until at least 6 months. They can be temperature sexed when in the incubator before they hatch, but that isn't 100% guaranteeing the sex.

Also make sure that you have two hot hides and two cool hides if and when you house them together. This will lower the chances of fighting over the "best" hide.

Another tip you can keep in mind is put their tanks side by side after the quarantine period so that they can see eachother and acclimate safely to eachothers presence before actually letting them meet face to face. The ebtween the tanks interaction should give you a good idea of how they'd act face to face as well. Flip side to that tho is I'm opposed to group living since leos are solitary creatures, so personally I wouldn't do it.
