Help with my new bunny
Hi I'm Angel,Cody's girlfriend I got a new bunny today and would like to know more about them. Any information would be great & very helpful Like what do they eat & how much a day? or anything about them too that you think a new bunny owner should know. Thank you in advance

Re: Help with my new bunny
What kind of rabbit, it looks like a himilayan colored californian rabbit, how big and how old. Don't give it anything but its pelletts and hay for now, NO FRESH VEGGIES. I raise netherland dwarfs for show and gothicgurrrl raises lionheads so I'm sure we can help you but... I do have to say I am disappointed you would get a new animal before educating yourself about your future pet. You can check the american rabbit breeders association web site or the house rabbit society web page for more information on their care. The language of lagomorphs is also a great site to help understanding wha your rabbit is telling you.
Re: Help with my new bunny
I have the knowledge that the owner gave me, which is enough to be an average owner. But I would rather be an exceptional owner, which is why I asked. Thanks for the info. And yes, himilayan, 1 yr old, as for size, not sure.

Re: Help with my new bunny
She's cute, even though I'm not one for red-eyes. lol
I would recommend Timothy hay. Do not feed alfalfa unless she's under 6 mo. or pregnant/nursing. Hay is the main part of the diet and should be available at all times. Pellets should only be 5% of the diet. Fresh greens should be provided daily, but I wouldn't recommend it right now until she's settled in. Slowly start adding fresh greens once she's comfortable with her new surroundings. Only feed fruits/veggies as a SMALL treat.
Also would be best to get a solid-bottomed cage. If you have the space, an exercise pen with litter box (yes! they can be trained! lol) is best. If you must use a cage, do not use pine or cedar bedding. Aspen is ok, but it's very poor at absorbing urine. I found that Carefresh ultra works best, though expensive.

Re: Help with my new bunny
For a rabbit himilayan sized, she should top out around 5 ish pounds. It I recommended for a rabbit that size to use a 16 or preferably an 18% timothy based pellet, for a 5 pound rabbit a little over a half cup of pellets a day but no more than 3/4 cups; a good wad of timothy hay, alfalfa (which actually is too rich for rabbits under 6 mos old), or mixed orchard grass for grazing and very limited fresh greens and veggies. Best is natural fresh veggies like dandilion greens and flowers, roses, long field grass and raspberry leaves as well as comfry. Too many fresh veggies can lead to your rabbit scouring which is not good. Rolled old fashioned oats, striped sunflower seeds and black oil seeds are also great treats when used sparingly as all can make your rabbit super fat. You can give dried papaya, dried pineaple and dried mango prophilactically to help control wool block (hairballs) which is recommended esp. Around moulting season 1 piece every couple of weeks or again your rabbit can scour. Hopefully this helps get you off to a good start. I have all kinds of tips or home remedies if your bun gets sick so post up any questions you have and id be happy to help
