size ?
Kermit told me that my vivarium is not big enough for two fully grown adult royals. But never got back to me when I asked her what size would be okay.
So now I'm asking the general forum. What size would be a bare minimum for two fully grown royals to live in ?
Cheers
Charlie x

Re: size ?
Found it lol
Royal Pythons are not highly active and do not need huge enclosures. A medium sized vivarium (Even a fish tank with a tight fitting lid) will house your Royal nicely. The vivarium should allow a minimum of 1 square foot of floor space to each foot of snake and be approximately a third of the snake’s length in height. Hatchlings should start out in an appropriately sized small vivarium as they can become stressed and stop feeding in an oversized vivarium.
All Snakes are excellent escape artists, so care must be taken when planning their housing. Make sure your vivarium or tank has a tight fitting lid, which can be clamped down. Royal Pythons are very strong and can push a loose fitting lid from a vivarium.
Royal Pythons may grow up to 5ft in length, but do not necessarily need a large vivarium. They will feel more secure in a suitably sized vivarium, which should be around 3ft(L)x2ft(W)x2ft(H) for an adult, dependant on how big your Royal Python grows.
So for two adult royals you would need 6ft by 2/4 ft by 2/4 ft

Re: size ?
Could be a different type of python Sarah - royals only get to around 4 to 5 ft and other pythons can get up to 12ft or more
Re: size ?
The majority of the caresheets I have seeen said the tank should be at least the length of the snake and the width should equal half the length of the snake. Royals are not arborial (wish someone would tell our ball that) so height isn't as important as the length. Just so you know charlie, I didn't reply right away because 1. I wanted to use a caresheet that's bookmarked on my pc, and all my visit lately have been on my phone so no access and 2. I wanted you to research it some yourself because nothing can replace what you learn along the way looking for the answer you need.

Re: size ?
Fair enough and thanks
well they in a 4 by 2 by 2 at the moment - and not even fully grown. this is what we got told by royal breeders and shops would be fine. Personally I don't understand how breeders kept them in those vision racks but a 4 by 2 by 2 is too small :/ x

Re: size ?
Yeah, but shops will house three and four pythons together and thats a rather large nono. I personally keep my ball in a 48 qt. tub and that'll last him till he is full grown.
Re: size ?
I know shops do because it looks better - and they sell more that way. But I trust the guy and shop and they aren't the type of shop to tell you a made up story just to sell you something. They actually care for the health and welfare of that animal x
Re: size ?
Somthng else to consider with shops or larger scale breeders that use rack systems is that there is a difference between what is baseline acceptable and what is proper for a confortable existance. Any herper knows larger is uaually better with most species IF they're willing to make the enclosure more than open space with basic needs.. water bowl substrait and bare minimum for hides if one at all. Trusting your friend and their shop is great but their giving you less than stellar advice on enclosure size is prob. Just difference in opinion between what's acceptabe for commericial display use versus a life of captivity.
Personally I'm not a fan of rack systems, we all suggest no less than a 10 gallon viv for leos yet some breeders keep them in rack boxes no biggger than a shoe box and that's acceptable? Personally for me, if you invest in the "pet" then its our reponsibility to provide QUALITY life which includes adequate space in their habitat.

Re: size ?
You're welcome Charlie... I am happy to help, and I hope that you don't take my lack of reply earlier as rejecting you or your querys... I'm the type that likes to make people think, and research a bit on their own to find the answers they're looking for... the stuff you find along the way is invaluable and will stay with you a lot longer than any freely given spoon fed info you can get from someone's mouth. Imo nothing can replace self guided research as the best educational tool, but when it's difficult to find the info you're looking for and you've made an ernest search then I'm more than willing to help anyone out that needs it (which is likely why you see me referr people to links more often than explaining everything over and over ). Hope you understand and aren't offended.
Re: size ?
Now you have explained why you didnt bother writing back i understand and agree with you. thought it was just you being funny, but was wrong.
have to agree with you 100% kel. i have more knowlege about leopard geckos through things i have researched and learnt along the way than from what people have told me.

Re: size ?
I'm glad you understand and agree Charlie, I would never intentionally disregard ANYONE'S messages to me asking for help... it's why I'm here , and I'm glad you got the answers you were looking for. I hope this experience doesn't prevent you from coming to me in the future with any herp questions you may have. It may take me a day or 2 to get back to you as I'm likely looking for links to provide, but I promise I WILL get back to you (or anyone who sends a message requesting information).
Re: size ?
Okay thanks - and no course not. As stated above now you have explained things I truly understand and know why you did it x
