Egg question Empty Egg question

Post by fufucuddlypoops6 Wed Aug 10, 2011 2:11 am

I'm not sure if this would go under breeding. But, since its an egg related question I thought this would be the appropriate place to put it.

Can females lay dud eggs without a male being around? I've had a bird do this before (I know, birds and reptiles are different, but they both lay eggs) and we found out 'he' was a 'she'.

I'm asking because my gecko won't let me even touch him, so I can't sex him, and I wasn't sure if one day I'd come home to a surprise egg or not.

Females will lay eggs regardless to whether or not they had breed or not Smile and you'd be surpised how similar the anatomy of bird and reptiles are Smile

They say that one formed from the other, right? I don't remember which way it goes.

Thanks! Very Happy

dinosaurs eventually developed onto weird bird things.. and their anatomy have stayed very similar as they evolved into two seperate species.. females of both birds and reptiles have a cloaca.. and think that they both share a joint reproductive and urinary system.

So does this mean that a female leo will produce and lay eggs whether or not she mates?

You see they don't always produce eggs, but they CAN always produce eggs. They can basically build a bubble of calcium inside there body, AKA an egg, and then either lay it, or reabsorb it.
With no mating, there will be no embryo inside the egg of course.

Its actually pretty rare that a female will lay an infetile egg without mating. They mainly only lay infertile eggs after they have mated, and failed to fertilise, which is common with first clutches, and first time breeders.

Hm. I'm still convinced that "he" is a "she" though. And it would really help if "he" laid an egg for me.

Yes. And depending on the age. If you are successful breeding a leo, and its a year of age or its first season. Chances are it wont produce fertile eggs. Cherry didn't (Before she got taken out of breeding) but Lizzie did - she laid a good 10 eggs in her first season.

Good luck finding the sex of it Smile
