licking? Empty licking?

Post by Mystic Thu Nov 03, 2011 8:26 pm

so odd question but i was sitting with my husband watching our leo poke her cute little head out of her hide, when she started licking the ground over and over and just started wondering around her tank licking everything in site, it wasn't the usual walk around and have a lick here or a lick there it was like 5 licks every step, she seemed to be looking for something. i have never seen her lick so much and was wondering if i should get some calcium and let her have a couple licks. i don't want her getting calcium bubbles and Kermit told me to just dust her food every day with repashies calcium plus, which i have been doing. but do you think she needs a bit more? or do you think she just wanted to taste every thing in her cage tonight XD

Those bubbles can also be caused by excessive amounts of protein as well as calcium that is not being absorbed by the body. But either way, they are fairly easy to get rid of. You simply have to adjust diet and/or supplementation. I would put a small cap of pure calcium (without D3) in her tank and see if she laps it up. Maybe her body is telling her that she needs more calcium? This may seem silly but you do have fresh water available for her to drink at all times? Just checking.

Sounds more like a type of scent marking behavior to me. How old is your little girl? It certainly can't hurt to leave a calcium dish in over night just in case she is searching for suppliments but if that's what it was I don't think shed be going to town licking the same spot if she didn't find what she was looking for in the first lick or 2 in a familliar enviroment. She knows every inch of tha viv, she knows where everything is and what it tasts/smells like. Aggressive licking to me like marking. If you do leave the calcium in over night I would dust with the repashy the feeding before you leve it in and the feeding after you remove it just to ensure she's getting enough D3 to absorb the extra calcium. There are new behaviors you're going to see every day as your leo ages physically and mentally into adulthood. Sexual and social maturity will evoke different responses and actions from your leo. Scent marking being one, egg development in sexually maturing femals is another, hormone surgs for both genders, etc. Lots going on the first 2 years.

At 7 months old she's coming into sexual development and maturity. It is likely behavioral actions based on physical development moreso than a physical need imo.
