Methods of buying animals.
How do you guys buy your animals? I know people don't like to go to pet stores so they go straight to a breeder. How do you find a breeder? Does anyone order online and is it safe?

Re: Methods of buying animals.
I got my first 2 leopard geckos from a local Petco. Luckily they take fairly good care of them, not the best husbandry but no sand and no loose crickets. My first two turned out very well, they have grown up nicely.
From there on my g/f and I got addicted to them, so we started slowly looking at all the various morphs online, started to order from various breeders, and the collection grew from there.
I would say ordering online is safe, but you should stick to reputable breeders to avoid getting malnourished/ill geckos, or getting something not as advertised. Going to a reptile show is also a good way to see the geckos you are buying in person before purchasing them.
As for how you would know someone's reputable, ask around, check forums for breeders that post often. I have a list of breeders I've purchased from and work with while starting our own lil breeding operation here. If you need recommendations let me know. It helps to know what you are looking for and your price range, as different breeders specialize in different things.

I was wanting a Sub-adult, or an adult, Super Snow as my next leo. Wanted a female. Not so ready for one yet because I still need another tank and a UTH.

Done, these are ones that sell snows as that's what ThyUnholy asked for. If you are looking for something in particular let me know, there's too many to list.

Re: Methods of buying animals.
I bought my first from a local pet store that specializes in reptiles. When I was looking for a specific morph, they were able to recommend a local breeder. It was nice to lay eyes on the geckos before I paid for them. The breeder even came to me with the geckos I chose.

Re: Methods of buying animals.
So far, I have always purchased my geckos up front from breeders, I have never ordered online just because I feel that shipping makes it too $$ for me. I'll just wait until the next show if there's something I want.
If I do get a gecko from a petstore, it is because it is either up for adoption because they cant sell it or someone left one there and they don't want to take care of it.

I've never bought from them but they answered some of my questions I emailed them about their snakes before. They were nice for me. You might wanna call before hand or even email them, to see if they have what you are looking for.

Re: Methods of buying animals.
I ordered my leo from a breeder I found on another leo forum some time ago. he came to me all the way from Utah to Pennsylvania and was just perfect. I had many communications with the breeder between my first inquiry, placing my deposit and finally having him shipped. All in all with shipping it came to about $110 american if I remember correctly but worth every penny imo. I have a happy healthy leo whos morph I know for certain plus his hatch date and the breeder even made sure to handle him a bit more for me before sending him to be sure he was tame. He ate with in 3 days of him getting here and settled in really fast. Quality is always worth the extra money esp. if you're serious about your animals and want to ever consider breeding in the future.

Re: Methods of buying animals.
I got my first leo banana from a pet shop.. which I was unsure about but luckily I was volunteering there so I could handle her daily and health check her The only annoying thing is that I don't know her birthday or exact age... I only know she was around 1 when I bought her.
My second leo grumpy I bought from a breeder...Jordan, our admin in fact! It's a much better experience because you can view them before you buy them, learn their exact parentage and birthday.

Re: Methods of buying animals.
Just a note, any reputable breeder will be able to tell you hatch dates and parenting of the animal. They should be proud and willing to provide this information. If they can't or won't, then I highly recommend not purchasing from them. A bad record keeper generally leads to a bad animal. If they can't keep track of that stuff, then why should you believe anything else they say about the animals health?
