white flecks on head of leo
My first Gecko's:
I just got this mated pair a month ago, they are eating and pooping regularly.
But I have noticed little white flecks on Leo's head.
Do you know what this might be and how does he look ( health wise).
Edit: New Pics

Re: white flecks on head of leo
A picture could help but he could have a disease someone toled me about that i dont know if its real or not, but Scale Rot. Also it could just be shedding. There are a lot of other things too im not the best expert. I say keep an eye on him and see if it comes off with a warm water on a cotton ball.

You could go to host photo and copy th url into a insert photo box. That always works for me.

Re: white flecks on head of leo
Thanks for getting the pix up... First of all what kind of substrait is that? Looks like a gravel with dirt substrait. Loose substrait is wrong for many reasons but in this case the bacteria that can build up is immense. It looks to me like it could be a bacterial/fungal infection but you'd expect to find it on other parts of his body as well if it were. Scale rot, or necrotising dermatitis is a fungal infection that does present with white spots (do a google image search for scale rot and you'll see), but it would take meds from a very and proper diagnosis for type specific antibiotics. Get that substrait out, disinfect the viv, soak the leo in warm water for 15 minutes and take some diluted peroxide (50% peroxide, 50% spring water) and clean the affected areas. The other thing it could be is mites. Again google image search, you'll find a picture of a tank full of what looks like dandruff, those are mites. Search mites in reptiles. Its only a bandaide solution until you can get him to a vet for proper diagnosis and treatment. If it clears up immediately, like within 24 hours of disinfecting and soaking you might be ok but it could reappear. Overall his body condition look good from what I can see aside of the mystery spots.
Re: white flecks on head of leo
He is in the hide, but it never gets moist???
It is coconut husk and vermiculite.
my floor no substrate only the non-slip material for shelves.
pic added to top.....still cant get the "host an image" to work and
followed the "adding and image to post" in this forum.
I will look for scale rot. and i did just get chicken mass for the base in with the mealies but these are white not black.

Merck Vet Manual:
Mites:
http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/index.jsp?cfile=htm/bc/171409.htm
Scale Rot:
http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/index.jsp?cfile=htm/bc/171407.htm
but they dont seem right. I guess I will have to check him. he is not to happy with me as I have changed their cage twice up from the 10 gallon that the previous owners had and the hide is with the same but new substrate that they were in before ( and breed in before).
I also seperated him last week because someone told me that if she is pregnant to do that, well he was pissed and even gve me a little nip when i wanted to hold him after seperating them. Cleo ended up sleeping beside the glass where he was so after 2 days i brought Leo back in and he and Cleo had a few good kisses. Today and last night was weird, I thought they were fighting but they are making out in the hide,,,,I thought if she was pregnant they wouldnt do that. maybe she's not.
So this could be stress too or he might just be starting to shed as was mentioned, i hope so.
any and all feedback and suggestions would be great.

Re: white flecks on head of leo
Well if she is feeding and sleeping and mating normal she should be fine. I did not know geckos where so attached liked that to their cage mates. That is so cool. It seems like it could be shed but still if you ever find a way to get a picture it would help a lot.

Re: white flecks on head of leo
Ok, so the pictures look like the head has scarring or "Paint dropplets" on it. It doest look like shedding so that is out. It could be the way she is soposed to look. Some geckos receive different colrs and patterns as thay grow. Even though that is not a high percentage it is possible.

Re: white flecks on head of leo
Do you have calcium in the tank for him/her to eat? Some of mine enjoy playing in their calcium and they kind of look like that when they do that. Just a suggestion, it is not the easiest to see.

Re: white flecks on head of leo
Firstly Thanks for the support and new pics up top - i had BBcode off.
So I took Leo out last night and washed his head a bit, it looks like the white flecks came off. I will know later after I check.

Re: white flecks on head of leo
Those white flecks are most likely the result of roughhousing or he may have rubbed his head against something hard. Its basically just small bits of dry skin, nothing to worry about.
