Question about Heating
I have a 20 gallon long setup. I have UTH and a ceramic heater, but the temp on the themometer hardly ever gets above 80. Just wondering if this is ok since I have the under tank heater. I have had a red heat light, but it didn't get it any hotter than that either.

Re: Question about Heating
That's odd. Do you have a thermometer with a probe?

Re: Question about Heating
herp is right if you only have one of those stick on temp thingies those suck, a proper probe thermometer works a lot better.

Re: Question about Heating
Welcome to the forum, Jeremy!
You should measure the floor temp above the heat mat with a probe thermometer or a temp gun. Leos get their heat through their bellies, which helps them digest their food. Air temp isn't too important with leos.

Herp your question to kathryn would be better served sent in a private message as posting it in this thread will only take the thread off topic. Please redirect you question to her privately.
For the op, you will need to adjust your temps and get a more accurate methods of reading your temps. Out sounds to new like you may need to up size your uth to help get the proper floor temps. kathryn is correct in saying air temps aren't that important since leos are not arborial tree living herps, they are terrestrial, so out is indeed ground temps that are most important. Using elements to elevate air temps risk removing the proper humidity levels you need for your group which could lead to problems with shedding and could lead to dehydration if not properly monitored and compensated for. First thing I would do is get the probe thermometer, place it directly on the floor of your viv right over your uth for the most accurate reading. Once your sure your temps are being read accurately we can help you get the proper temps either with supplemental heat sources our a larger our better uth
