Fire to wood Empty Fire to wood

Can a UTH set fire to a piece of wood? I wanted to put a piece of wood in the middle of the tank to divide it but Adam seems to think it will catch fire and be dangerous. Ugh?

it would have to get REALLY hot before it would catch wood on fire! and im sure the gecko would die from overheating long before it would catch fire, it would have to be way hotter than i think a uth would get. to be safe, and make Adam feel better, you could always put flat rocks under the wood, between the cage floor, and the wood....this will be an extra safety precaution...

Well, i dont have any flat rocks, i've only got some more wood :') Its like sliced log, i dont know where he gets it from. My UTH is under providing anyway - i THINK, i really need a thermometer for crying out loud! It doesnt feel hot only 'a bit warm' when i touch it and thats through one sheet of kitchen roll. I need to put a divider in now, ive been saying they need seperating for about two weeks but Adam is too busy to make a proper lid and divider for them so this is just temporary...i hope -rolls eyes-

buy yourself a temp gun. you can get them from 25 dollars to a few hundred dollars. i use a 50 dollar pe2 from pro exotics. you can check every inch of every tank you have, instantly. they are non contact temp readers, and for what you would spend eatin out once or twice, you can have one! i would NOT keep ANY reptiles without one! check out tempgun.com. you will be very happy you did. also remember your body temp is around 96 to 98 degrees most of the time, so if it feels hot to you, it is probably too hot anyways, it should only feel warm, not hot...but get a good temp reading device, and use it regularly. i like tempguns the most, because they are THE most accurate temp reading units you can buy, and you only need ONE to check all of your tanks, even the water, and the animals....plus the cool and warm side hides, and your thermal gradient ranges. any serious herpoculturist should have one in my opinion. but, back to the wood, i think you will be fine, no worries....unless of course, your uth is getting WAY too hot! good luck!

it should not burn the wood, the only time i ever had a UTH "burn wood" was when my ex sis in law ripped the protective plasit off one and put it back under my tank, thankfully i didnt have anything inside the tank at the time. but it made scortch marks all over the table the tank and UTH where on. because of that i still have to get my self a new UTH when i get some money to afford one.

It is highly unlikely that a uth would burn wood when the flash point is 572*F (thanks gogle Smile ). If your bf is still uncomfortable, spend a few bucks and get a peel n stick vinyl tile, cut it to the width of the piece of wood, and ahdere it to the viv floor under the dividing wood. Voila. An insulating buffer. I have natural cut logs (about 3.5 inches in diameter) in my viv holding up the piece of slate for my leo's hot hide, worst that's happened is it dried out and the bark is peeling off. Its been like that for a bit over a year.

Considering that a uth only puts out enough heat to equal our feaverish hand it wouldn't be easily felt thru your substrait e.sp since your body temp is 98.6 and your viv shouldn't be over 96. If you could feel it strongly thru the substrait it would be too hot for your leo.

Hope this helps Smile
