New to geckos
So I just got my first leopard gecko today, and I really want to make sure he is happy as possible! He is 3 months old and somewhat afraid of me; does anyone have any tips, advice, or precautions for me? I'd appreciate the help a ton as I love my gecko very much!
Cheers

Welcome to the forum, best advice I can give is to read read read. Theres a lot to learn about proper housing and feeding to ensure your leo thrives.

Theres several links to threads of immense knowledge, that I think you'll find extra helpful in your infancy of geckos.

Hello, and welcome to the forum! My name is Kathryn, I hope you enjoy your time here!
If you can tell us a little bit about your set-up and how you care for your leo, we can give you some great information! One thing I know a lot of people make mistakes on is two things: substrate and heating. Don't use loose substrate (like sand, wood, gravel etc)! Use paper towel or tiling (ceramic, slate, or peel-n-stick). And leos get their heat from their bellies, not from above. So don't use a heat lamp, use an UTH (under tank heater). Those are the two most common mistakes that I see alot.
There are also several stickies throughout the website that can help you:

And here is a area to see what other people's setups look like: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Good luck, and I look forward to talking with you!

Re: New to geckos
Thanks so much everyone; right now my Leo is in a ten gallon tank with paper towels covering the bottom. He has an uth on one side with some flat rocks to lie on and a toilet paper roll hide. On the cool side he has a small moist hide and a big dry hide made from clean wood. He also has some greenery hanging around to make it feel more natural .
Thanks again!
Thanks again!

Re: New to geckos
Sounds like your leo has everything he needs, except that the moist hide should be half on the heat mat and half off. This is to create humid, moist air which will help him to shed. Also, he needs a water bowl which must be changed daily and a small bottle cap with pure calcium for him to lick should he need it.

Re: New to geckos
Sounds like you are on the right path!
Since you just got him, I would leave him alone for a few days. Don't try to pick him up for about a week, so he can get used to his new surrondings. He may not eat much either, until he is fully settled in!
To get him used to you, stick your hand in the tank everyday for a little bit. Eventually he will come up to your hand and smell/lick it, and climb on it. This will build the trust you need to be able to pick him up.
Good luck!

Re: New to geckos
I have him crawling up my arm and aroun my back and down the other arm, seems like he's having fun so I let him do what he wants. He ate for the first time today too, and seems to be overall enjoying his new home

Thats great! Glad to hear you having fun with your leo. Congrats! Just be careful that he doesn't decide to leap off your shoulder cos they have been known to jump from any height.
