Shopping list Empty Shopping list

Post by cplawrence Sat Mar 10, 2012 12:14 am

Not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but I am looking into purchasing a leopard gecko and am preparing my shopping list. I currently have a 20L tank with lid that I was planning on using.

Heat mat: I was looking at the 12W (10.5" x 11") version of this http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=22806
Rheostat
Hide boxes x2 (one on the end with the mat and one on the other end; cool hide would have misted moss)
Desk lamp with low wattage bulb for day/light cycle (room has very little ambient light)
Vitamin/calcium supplement
Vinyl peel and stick tiles for substrate (thanks for the suggestion!)
Water dish

Are there things I am missing?

For the hide spaces, I am a fan of the natural look and loved Kermit's setup using slate. Would the rocks need to be fixed to one another to prevent tumbling?

Any advice would be appreciated.
Chris

Hey Chris thanks for the compliment thumbs up there's a bit of a debate that brings my viv's construction and why it is how it is here: http://www.leopardgeckoforum.com/t3003-temperature-advise-needed

There's actually a mixture of slate, shale, and field stone in there. All have different thermodynamic qualities because of the density of the individual rocks. The roof of the cold side hide on the left is shale, the base rock in that one is field stone, the top of the hot side hide is slate, and the steps are a combination of flat field stone and shale, the catwalk is shale, the middle hide that divides ac ool hide spot also doubles as a cool moist hide roof is slate. Anything round is field stone.

and to answer your question, that is also in that thread Wink but it is all in the construction of my viv. Think of it as a delicate balancing act and creative stacking that makes a leo viv bulldozer proof. The only thing that is glued is the little tree branch support holding up the cold side hid platform on the left.

As far as things your missing, a 20 long viv with somthing ranging in age from juvie to sub adult should have more hides. young 'uns don't like feeling exposed, when they mature a bit you'll need 3 hides, humid, hot, and cold dry side hide. for younger I recommend at least 4 hides. Creatively stack some lengths of bark over hides to make additional hiding space.

As an alternative, a tube of silicone from a DIY store used to secure the rocks together is never discouraged. It's up to you how you'll place it, and silicone will hold it together just fine.
