While I tend to disagree a bit on this since I have seen very experienced reputable breeders say they can be contributed to excess calcium as well as excessive proteins and fats I treat both. I've experienced these with my leo.first I cut back his calcium, the bubbles greatly decreased but not entirely so I figured whatever was left had to be excess protein so we cut back from feeding every other day to 2-3x a week and now after nearly 6 months they're just a slight bulge no longer a bubble. Also incorporated a more varied diet and usually only 2-4 bugs per feeding instead of feeding till he was full.

I do trust Ray from designer geckos implicitly, anything that comes from him is highly researched and he is a very credible source imo, almost second to Tremper in my eyes.

If you have a breeder female fattening up for the breeding season, it's generally not something you have to worry about. Females will pig out just prior to the breeding season, and they do use the excess storage of fat and nutrients for eggs development.

But if you have a gecko who's just a pet, not looking to breed, and it has both the protein bubbles + fat tail, then you should definitely cut back on feeding. We generally spoil our pets, so most pets are a tad overfed. Sometimes it's harmless, but it's always better to keep them healthy if you want to keep them for long.

The idea of protein bubbles came about because people actually took their geckos in and had the bubbles tested. The results came back to be liquid protein. So far I haven't seen anybody really coming up with a test result stating they contain calcium. Honestly I don't know where it came from, but I know prior to me researching deeper into it, I also was calling them calcium bubbles. Would be nice if we can see calcium results in a test somewhere.
