Not warm emough... HELP!!
I just got my leopard gecko today, and i bought a thermometer and daytime and nighttime bulbs. The day is regular white light and the night is a red bulb. But according to the thermometer, its only getting up to like 80 degrees in the tank, and my gecko is climbing closer and closer to the light, so I think he's cold. How can I make the tank warm enough??? Any advice would be greatly appeciated!!

Re: Not warm emough... HELP!!
First and foremost DO Away with both lights. Bright white lighting can cause undo stress to your leo and may hurt its eyes. Leopard Geckos are Crepuscular (Most active at sunrise and Sunset) and all through the nite. They hide in caves under rocks things of that nature during the day. They do not require ANY special lighting needs. Best answer is to go out and purchase a UTH (Under Tank Heater) and a thermostat. As for the thermometer its best to have either a Probe type Thermometer or best answer is to get a Infrared Temperature Gun (Heat Gun). If you want lighting in the tank just so you can see your leo during the day i would recommend getting the Blue Day bulb and put it on a dimmer switch so you can control how much light is actually shinning in and keep it to the absolute minimum. And if you feel that you need more heat during the evening try either the Black Nite Bulb or Ceramic heat emitter. Best Of luck to you. and Welcome to Forums

No, but the tank is tall, not wide, and my gecko is always climbing up to the top of the tank, so an under tank heater probably wouldnt effect him... would it? Sorry, I'm new to geckos.

Re: Not warm emough... HELP!!
Actually spikey Leopard geckos live on the ground and get all there heat from there bellies. They require belly heat to also aid in digesting there foods. They are not Basking reptiles and gain no benefit from overhead heating. So yes UTH would be 100% beneficial to your leo

Welcome to the forums spikey! and i am sorry to say that the lights do nothing for your leo they do need a under tank heater other wise they cant digest their food. the basics for your leo should be a 10 gal tank paper towel substrate, a digital probe thermometer (its like $10 at petsmart) a under tank heater, it needs to take up 1/3rd of the bottom of the tank, your gonna need a vitamin supplement along with some calcium powder. you will need 3 hides one to be right ontop of were the under tank heater is and one to be on the other side were its cool, then a moist hide half on the heat mat and half on. ^_^ thats a great basic set up.
