Discoid roaches

Post by Dangle on Sat Mar 03, 2012 9:42 am

What's your opinion on them? I thought all roaches were illegal here in Florida except the ones you find crawling on your walls but apparently a reptile shop I go to sometimes gets them in. Should I try them out? My little leo is 8 grams now so they would have to still be tiny.

Roaches are a good staple diet for leos, good meat to shell ratio, good nutritional balance. my understanding too was that dubia roaches were banned in florida so this guy might be breaking some laws.

Discoids are native to Florida (Mexico, Central, & South America) so they are legal for Florida residents. Main difference between Dubia & Discoid is that both adult male & female discoids have full grown wings. Making them harder to sex if you need to. Also Discoids do get larger than Dubias.

Aside from that, they are a great alternative for Florida residents where Dubia roaches are illegal.

They come in all sizes so make sure you buy size appropriate to feed to your gecko. 8g is a very small gecko, so get the smallest nymphs.

I reweighed him today and now he's 12 grams. He eats a lot.
