Candling Eggs?

Post by Jordan on Mon May 02, 2011 11:29 pm

Can someone just tell me how to candle an egg in detail please?

I know what is involved in it, but i've never done it.
But how do you go about doing it?

With leo eggs it is really easy. They are easy to see through even on the first day you can usually tell if they are fertile or not. I hold them pinched lightly between my thumb and pointer finger and just use a flashlight to shine on one side of the egg. I look at the opposite side of the egg and if it is fertile you will see a red bullseye, yes it literally looks like a bullseye. Of course I still incubate them even if I don't see that but it is a good indicator if you see it or not.

I am self taught on doing this so if I am giving incorrect directions feel free anyone to correct me. This works for me so that is what I do.

Well thanks for the help Jolene. Sounds rather easy i suppose. I just odn't like picking up the eggs once they are in the incubator lol.

I understand. I usually candle them before I put them in and then I candle them a few weeks after that just to check on them.

you know the bullseye Jolene, is it supposed to be on the top of the egg or bottom? I have all mine on top, because thats where it seems to be when its layed, is that right?

Yes, that is right...That is the embryo and you want it on top so it doesn't drown.

yeah thought so, just never seen the actual bullseye thing before. Fascinating though, i could see a bit of it moving, like a blood flow sort of.

Same, i have a really clear egg at the moment, its not too healthy unfortunately, but because its so thin, its fascinating to look at the embryo. Smile So i'll try and get pics too, but can;t be bothered at the moment, after all the pics i took of my set up.

Thankyou Smile I can't wait to see all your photos! I love reproductive biology.. I really fascinates me .. from the time the animals eggs are fertilized and the young are born/eggs are laid. Im so interested in how things develop and about genetics. I can't wait to study it as a module at uni. Very Happy
